SPOKANE, Wash. -- Vandals broke ten windows out of the Hillyard Library over the weekend. The windows were covered with cardboard and duct tape until repairs can be made.
Library visitors said they find the damage especially upsetting in an economy where budgets remain tight.
"I feel sort of angry because people are taking away from others,"?said Steven Peyron, a frequent visitor of the Hillyard Library. "Personally, I like coming here because it allows me access to more books than I could ever buy in a lifetime, and it allows me to help teach my son and so I just feel upset that people are taking away from kids. People that really need it."
The glass on the emergency door of the library was shattered and almost a dozen windows were broken. Library staff said the damage was done sometime over the weekend. Only the outside glass of the double-pane windows was broken.
Library officials said the building remained secured, calling the damage a nuisance and frustrating.
The Hillyard Branch was one of the several libraries in?Spokane that was facing closure because of a budget shortfall. But voters approved a property tax increase that will prevent the branch's closure.
"I voted to pass the bond and I was upset that we are going to have to spend money on non-necessities, like replacing something that somebody broke because they were upset,"?said Peyron.
Library officials said they have scheduled repair work for the windows.
