LIMA, Peru (AP) ? Teenagers throughout Latin America have long looked north for pop music inspiration. Now the East is rising, with a large and enthusiastic cult of fans in some countries following the K-pop music from Korea.
It's a movement especially strong in Peru and Chile, and it goes far beyond Psy and "Gangnam Style."
Some 13,000 fans attended an April concert in Lima by the group Super Junior. Another group, Big Bang, drew 14,000 in November. They've drawn similar crowds in neighboring Chile.
Hundreds of fans such as Araceli Galan gather each week in a downtown park in Lima to dance to the energetic music. Some dress up as Korean comic book characters.
"I've liked K-pop since I was 10," said Galan, now a 16-year-old student at a local university. "I learned everything from the Internet because here in Peru you don't find much on radio or television."
She's amassed a collection of posters, bracelets, T-shirts and records of her favorite, Kim Hyun Joong, who was met by thousands of fans when he arrived at the airport in Peru's capital in February.
"Although you won't believe it, in Peru the K-pop groups are starting to be more popular than Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga or Demi Lovato," said Diana Rodriguez, who is capitalizing on the trend by organizing Korean dance contests throughout Peru.
While there's little hard data on that, there's no questioning the fervor of the fans who turn up at Ramon Castilla Park each Saturday and emulate the dances of K-pop bands.
"We start at 10 in the morning and we stay until 6 in the afternoon," Galan said.
A bus trip away is the small Arenales shopping center where entire floors are dedicated to South Korean music, clothes and food.
"I like the 'sujebi' soup and another dish that combines a sweet and salty flavor that I can't remember the name of," Galan said.
Some try to solve the language problem by having the songs translated into Spanish and posting them on the Internet. "The lyrics are pretty. It's not as eroticized as reggaeton. It's more romantic," said Pamela Diaz, a 26-year-old fan.
"It's made me want to learn Korean," said her 14-year-old sister, Sabrina.
The trend has surprised Peruvian parents, just as the onslaught of rock-and-roll once alarmed an earlier generation.
"My father listens to rock in English; he doesn't like K-pop at all," Galan said. "He tells me, 'Why do you listen to that music if you don't know Korean?' And I tell him that he doesn't know how to speak English either. Music you only need to feel."

CHICAGO (AP) ? Infections in U.S. hospitals kill tens of thousands of people each year, and many institutions fight back by screening new patients to see if they carry a dangerous germ, and isolating those who do. But a big study suggests a far more effective approach: Decontaminating every patient in intensive care.
Washing everyone with antiseptic wipes and giving them antibiotic nose ointment reduced bloodstream infections dramatically in the study at more than 40 U.S. hospitals.
The practice could prove controversial, because it would involve even uninfected patients and because experts say it could lead to germs becoming more resistant to antibiotics. But it worked better than screening methods, now required in nine states.
The study found that 54 patients would need to be decontaminated to prevent one bloodstream infection.
Nevertheless, the findings are "very dramatic" and will lead to changes in practice and probably new laws, said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious-disease specialist who was not involved in the research. Some hospitals are already on board.
The study targeted ICU patients, who tend to be older, sicker, weaker and most likely to be infected with dangerous bacteria, including drug-resistant staph germs.
The decontamination method worked like this: For up to five days, 26,000 ICU patients got a nose swab twice a day with bacteria-fighting ointment, plus once-daily bathing with antiseptic wipes.
Afterward, they were more than 40 percent less likely to get a bloodstream infection of any type than patients who had been screened and isolated for a dangerous germ called MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
In the year before the experiment began, there were 950 bloodstream infections in intensive care patients at the hospitals studied. The results suggest that more than 400 of those could have been prevented if all hospitals had used the decontamination method.
"We've definitively shown that it is better to target high-risk people," not high-risk germs, said lead author Dr. Susan Huang, a researcher and infectious-disease specialist at the University of California, Irvine.
The hospitals in the study are all part of the Hospital Corporation of America system, the nation's largest hospital chain. HCA spokesman Ed Fishbough said the 162-hospital company is adopting universal ICU decontamination.
The study was published online Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study focused on the MRSA germ. It can live on the skin or in the nose without causing symptoms but can be life-threatening when it reaches the bloodstream or vital organs. It is especially dangerous because it is resistant to many antibiotics.
More than 70,000 ICU patients were randomly selected to get one of three treatments: MRSA screening and isolation; screening, isolation and decontamination of MRSA carriers only; and universal decontamination without screening. Partial decontamination worked better than just screening, and universal decontamination was best.
About a decade ago, hospital-linked invasive MRSA infections sickened more than 90,000 people nationwide each year, leading to roughly 20,000 deaths.
As hospitals improved cleanliness through such measures as better hand-washing and isolating carriers of deadly germs, those numbers dropped by about a third, with fewer than 10,000 deaths in 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC has been recommending screening and isolation in certain cases. Now it's having experts review the results and help determine whether the agency should revise its recommendations, said the CDC's Dr. John Jernigan.
"It is a very important finding. It advances our understanding of how best to control infections caused by MRSA" and other germs, Jernigan said.
The CDC and the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality helped pay for the study. Dr. Carolyn Clancy, who heads the research agency, said the findings have "the potential to influence clinical practice significantly and create a safer environment where patients can heal without harm."
Jernigan said the decontamination approach is much simpler than screening and isolation. But he said its costs need to be studied.
Huang said the five-day nose treatment costs about $35 for brand-name ointment but only $4 for a generic version. The antiseptic wipes cost only about $3 to $5 more per day than usual washing methods, she said. But those costs might be offset by other savings from avoiding widespread screening and isolation, she said.
Intensive care patients are already routinely bathed. The study just swapped soap with wipes containing a common antiseptic. Some study authors have received fees from makers of antiseptic wipes or have done research or unpaid consulting for those companies.
The nose ointment treatment is more controversial because it could cause more germs to become resistant to the antibiotic, Jernigan said.
"That's something we're going to have to very closely monitor if this practice is implemented widely," he said.
An editorial accompanying the study voices similar concerns and notes that research published earlier this year found that using just antiseptic wipes on ICU patients reduced bloodstream infections. Two infection control specialists at Virginia Commonwealth University wrote the editorial.
Editorial co-author Dr. Michael Edmond said his university's hospital is among those that already use antiseptic wipes on ICU patients.
While MRSA screening and isolation is widely accepted, Edmond said that approach "takes a toll on patients." Isolating patients who test positive for MRSA but don't have symptoms makes patients angry and depressed, and studies have shown that isolated patients are visited less often by nurses and tend to have more bedsores and falls, he said.

1. Stay away from free credit card offers/vendors.
At the beginning of every semester, credit card companies flock to college campuses in search of unsuspecting prey?young, undisciplined coeds? and approve them for credit card at interest rates as obscene as 24%. They do this because they know that the typical American college student is consumption-driven and fiscally unsavvy. What often results is that college students rack up uber levels of debt, find it difficult to repay, and end up ruining their credit. 2. Live like an undergraduate, not a superstar.

The Catholic Church's leading 'exorcist' is calling for all priests to be allowed to conduct the ritual after Pope Francis?apparently?performed one?in St Peter's Square last week, according to a report by the Mail Online, in Ucanews.?
Father Gabriele Amorth, head of the International Association of Exorcists, wants the current rules requiring all priests to obtain permission to perform exorcisms from their bishop to be relaxed.
Father Amorth, who claims he has carried out 160,000 exorcisms, said his request has been prompted by Pope Francis performing what he insists was an exorcism on a Mexican man ?possessed by four demons?.?
He told the Sunday Times: 'I will ask the pope to give all priests the power to carry out exorcisms, and to ensure priests are properly trained for these starting with the seminary. There's a huge demand for them.'
His comments come after Pope Francis was captured on film performing an apparent exorcism on May 19.?
The footage shows Pope Francis placing his hands on the head of a disabled man who appears to go into a frenzy of convulsions and shaking, before slumping as Francis prays over him.

May 29, 2013 ? Instead of through pigments, these 'polymer opals' get their colour from their internal structure alone, resulting in pure colour which does not run or fade. The materials could be used to replace the toxic dyes used in the textile industry, or as a security application, making banknotes harder to forge. Additionally, the thin, flexible material changes colour when force is exerted on it, which could have potential use in sensing applications by indicating the amount of strain placed on the material.
The most intense colours in nature -- such as those in butterfly wings, peacock feathers and opals -- result from structural colour. While most of nature gets its colour through pigments, items displaying structural colour reflect light very strongly at certain wavelengths, resulting in colours which do not fade over time.
In collaboration with the DKI (now Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability) in Germany, researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed a synthetic material which has the same intensity of colour as a hard opal, but in a thin, flexible film.
Naturally-occurring opals are formed of silica spheres suspended in water. As the water evaporates, the spheres settle into layers, resulting in a hard, shiny stone. The polymer opals are formed using a similar principle, but instead of silica, they are constructed of spherical nanoparticles bonded to a rubber-like outer shell. When the nanoparticles are bent around a curve, they are pushed into the correct position to make structural colour possible. The shell material forms an elastic matrix and the hard spheres become ordered into a durable, impact-resistant photonic crystal.
"Unlike natural opals, which appear multi-coloured as a result of silica spheres not settling in identical layers, the polymer opals consist of one preferred layer structure and so have a uniform colour," said Professor Jeremy Baumberg of the Nanophotonics Group at the University's Cavendish Laboratory, who is leading the development of the material.
Like natural opals, the internal structure of polymer opals causes diffraction of light, resulting in strong structural colour. The exact colour of the material is determined by the size of the spheres. And since the material has a rubbery consistency, when it is twisted and stretched, the spacing between spheres changes, changing the colour of the material. When stretched, the material shifts into the blue range of the spectrum, and when compressed, the colour shifts towards red. When released, the material will return to its original colour.
The material could be used in security printing in order to detect fraud. Polymer opals can produce much brighter colour at lower cost than the holograms normally seen on banknotes, and would be more difficult to forge.
The technology could also have important uses in the textile industry. "The World Bank estimates that between 17 and 20 per cent of industrial waste water comes from the textile industry, which uses highly toxic chemicals to produce colour," said Professor Baumberg. "So exploring other avenues to make colour is something worth exploring." The polymer opals can be bonded to a polyurethane layer and then onto any fabric. The material can be cut, laminated, welded, stitched, etched, embossed and perforated.
The researchers have recently developed a new method of constructing the material, which offers localised control and potentially different colours in the same material by creating the structure only over defined areas. In the new work, electric fields in a print head are used to line the nanoparticles up forming the opal, and are fixed in position with UV light. The researchers have shown that different colours can be printed from a single ink by changing this electric field strength to change the lattice spacing.

The computer-based vocabulary test counts for half of the speller?s overall score, with onstage tests, beginning Wednesday, to determine the other half of the score. Students are given 24 spelling words and 24 vocabulary words during Tuesday's preliminary round.?
The E.W. Scripps Company, which has sponsored the bee for 70 years, introduced the new vocabulary test last month. Bee director Paige Kimble told CNN the announcement was made after the regional spelling bees concluded.
?The timing of our announcement ... is absolutely fair," she said. "April is the first opportunity to engage all of the participants who have qualified for the national finals."
The new vocabulary component aims to help students "learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives," she said, in an April 9 announcement of the rule change.
Richard Morga, a Bee participant from Wood Dale, Ill., told the Chicago Tribune that he thinks the vocabulary test evens the playing field: ?The repeat (competitors) don?t really matter anymore,? he said.
Linda Tarrant, president of Hexco Academic, a company in Hunt, Texas, that provides personal coaching for elite spellers, told The Washington Times that the vocabulary change ?threw us all out of kilter.?
?I think they did it for all the right reasons, but I think it?s a terrible mistake to do it six weeks before the spelling bee,??Ms. Tarrant?said. ?You have kids who have been studying hard, two-to-four hours a day, since last year?s national bee. As the final eight singers on ?The Voice? took the stage on Monday, the stakes were high for the two new coaches. While Adam Levine and Blake Shelton each had three singers remaining, Usher and Shakira were down to one apiece. If Michelle Chamuel gets voted off this week, it knocks Usher out of the competition, and the same holds for Sasha Allen and Shakira.
How far would the coaches go to keep their singers alive? In Usher?s case, it was worth undergoing a wardrobe change.

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry declared Sunday he believes a potential $4 billion plan is emerging that could expand the Palestinian economy by up to 50 percent in the next three years.
It could also cut unemployment by almost two-thirds, and average wages could jump 40 percent, he said. But Kerry said it all depends on parallel progress on peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Kerry has been working with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and global business leaders to devise economic plans to revitalize the Palestinian economy. He offered few specific details and acknowledged that his vision might easily be taken as fantasy in a part of the world that has suffered through decades of conflict, and where peace prospects remain dim.
"We know it can be done," he insisted. "This is a plan for the Palestinian economy that is bigger, bolder and more ambitious than anything proposed" in the last two decades.
Kerry, outlining his hopes at a business conference on the Dead Sea in Jordan, was unsparing in his bold economic predictions:
?Palestinian agriculture production could double or triple.
?Tourism could triple.
?100,000 new homes, many of them energy efficient, could be built in the next three years.
The former Massachusetts senator, who has been trying as well to restart direct Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, was to meet later Sunday in Amman with Blair, American hedge fund investor Tim Collins and the foreign ministers of Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
He said he has been coordinating with leading business experts around the world and that the plan would explore new opportunities in tourism, construction, light manufacturing, agriculture, energy and communications.
"Is this a fantasy?" Kerry asked the crowd. "I don't think so, because there are already great examples of investment and entrepreneurship that are working in the West Bank. We know it can be done, but we've never experienced the kind of concentrated effort that this group is talking about bringing to the table."
He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas support the plan, but he added that it won't truly take hold unless both sides make headway on restarting peace talks.
Abbas also attended the conference in Jordan, as did Israeli President Shimon Peres, though they offered two starkly different messages on the peace impasse. The Palestinian leader spent much of the time criticizing Israeli intransigence, while the Israeli Nobel Peace Prize laureate pressed his government's view that negotiations should begin immediately without preconditions.
Kerry allowed that barriers to commerce would have to be removed to spur economic growth. The Palestinians have long complained about limitations on movement and investment that have hampered its economic potential.
Kerry has made four trips to Israel and the Palestinian territories over the last two months in an effort to rejuvenate the peace process. He hasn't made any tangible success so far but insists he is engaged in productive talks with both sides.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? A man arrested fleeing from an Anchorage home wearing boxer shorts has been charged with beating an elderly couple to death and sexually assaulting their 2-year-old great-granddaughter ? a case that officials say has shaken investigators for its brutality
Touch Chea, 71, and his wife, Sorn Sreap, 73, were found dead Saturday night from significant blunt force injuries. Police said Sreap and the toddler were raped.
Officers arrested Jerry Andrew Active, 24, as he allegedly fled the east Anchorage homicide scene. He was later charged with first and second-degree murder, sexual assault and burglary.
Investigators were affected by the brutality and the ages of the victims, police department spokeswoman Anita Shell said.
"They said this was the worst thing they had ever seen in their lives, and these are seasoned detectives," Shell said.
Police Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz said Sunday that there are no indications that the victims were connected to the suspect.
"It doesn't appear that he knew them," he said. "It looks like a totally random act."
The victims were part of an extended family that lived in a ground-floor, east Anchorage apartment with their granddaughter and her husband, who are the parents of the toddler and her 4-year-old brother. The younger couple's 90-year-old great-grandmother also lives in the apartment and was at home during the incident.
Police said the younger couple, who are in their 20s, went to a movie Saturday night with their son and left the 2-year-old in the care of Chea and Sreap.
The parents of the child and their son returned shortly before 8 p.m. and found the door locked from the inside.
They told police they forced their way in through a window and discovered the bodies of Chea and Sreap.
A man in his 20s, they said, was naked in a bedroom with their daughter.
The woman called 911and police dispatchers heard screaming over the phone. The woman reported a man had broken into her home and killed her grandmother, Sreap. The woman described the man as naked with several tattoos.
The woman, who is pregnant, and her husband tried to keep the suspect from leaving and a struggle began, Markiewicz said. The suspect, by then wearing boxer shorts, was able to get away after a few minutes of fighting, Markiewicz said.
Officers found Active about a block away.
"He did offer some resistance but he was arrested," Markiewicz said.
The suspect apparently entered the apartment through a window, Markiewicz said.
Active refused to give his name and he was not identified until Sunday. He was arraigned at the Anchorage Jail.
Markiewicz said the case is unusual.
"It's certainly very rare to see this kind of violence ? a complete stranger, sexually assaulting and murdering someone," he said.
The bodies of Sreap and Chea were taken to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies.
Names of the toddler and her parents were withheld.

DROPPING IN: A humpback whale plays in the water near Akaroa.
Passengers on board an Akaroa Harbour cruise in Canterbury today were treated with views of a breaching humpback whale.
Black Cat Cruises managing director Paul Bingham said the whale provided some spectacular sights leaping out of the water.
He said the mammal was just off Akaroa heads and briefly came into the harbour.
The whale was thought to be on its way north from Antarctica to warmer tropical waters.
Humpback whales have wide-ranging but distinctly seasonal migration patterns, travelling thousands of kilometres between high-latitude summer feeding grounds and low-latitude winter breeding and calving grounds, Bingham said.
They travel mainly along the east coast and through Cook Strait during winter and return along the west coast in spring.

BEIRUT (AP) ? The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah says his Shiite militant group will not stand idly by while its chief ally Syria is under attack.
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah says Hezbollah members are fighting in Syria against Islamic extremists who pose a danger to Lebanon.
Nasrallah's comments Saturday marked the first time he has publically confirmed his men were fighting in Syria.
They are also his first since Hezbollah fighters have become deeply involved in the battle for of the central Syrian town of Qusair.
He said tens of thousands of Islamic extremists from all over the world have been sent to Syria to fight the regime, but Hezbollah sends "a few" fighters and it is accused of intervening in the conflict.

Researchers say the study is the first to calculate how quickly amphibians are disappearing in the United States.
"If the rate observed is representative and remains unchanged, these species would disappear from half of the habitats they currently occupy in about 20 years," according to the USGS.
The negative findings held true in regions around the country, including on federally protected lands such as national parks.
To conduct the study, geologists analyzed reports of the presence of 48 species of amphibians at ponds and other habitats that were monitored between 2002 and 2011. The sampling data came from 34 different sites. The results were published in the journal PLOS One.
While the average decline was estimated at 3.7 percent, the study found that for species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's "red list," the news was even worse, with an 11.6 annual decline.
Amphibian species that had been seen as robust, capable of sustaining themselves amid global declines that have concerned scientists since the 1980s, were found to dwindle at a rate of 2.7 percent each year, a finding the researchers called "alarming."
"Overall, the trends we documented suggest that amphibian declines may be more widespread and severe than previously thought," the geologists wrote.
The data collected did not include possible causes of the declines. In their report, the scientists write that possible factors include climate change, disease, and drought. They also noted that the study covered a comparatively short period of time.
"Amphibians have been a constant presence in our planet's ponds, streams, lakes and rivers for 350 million years or so, surviving countless changes that caused many other groups of animals to go extinct," says USGS Director Suzette Kimball. "This is why the findings of this study are so noteworthy; they demonstrate that the pressures amphibians now face exceed the ability of many of these survivors to cope."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks mostly declined for a third day on Friday, putting indexes on track for their first negative week since mid-April, on lingering concern that the U.S. central bank may scale back its stimulus measures to support the economy.
Still, major U.S. stock indexes came off their lows. The Dow edged into positive territory by late afternoon trading, buoyed by a 4 percent gain in Procter & Gamble
A jump in April orders for long-lasting manufactured goods, such as refrigerators and toasters, painted an encouraging economic picture.
"A day like today is clear evidence that there is still money on the sideline to get into equities, (and investors are) looking for almost any excuse to get in," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Mangment in Bedford Hills, New York.
"This has been happening all week. Investors are taking advantage of down days to put more cash to work, especially when the decline is not based on something fundamental."
Trading has been choppy in the second half of the week as market participants assess the Federal Reserve's evolving stance toward markets. The Fed's stimulus measures have been instrumental in a rally that has driven U.S. stocks to record highs this year.
Even as there is some fear that the Fed will exit too soon, many analysts say the eventual tapering of the central bank's stimulus will come with an expansion of the economy and corporate earnings, which will continue to support equities.
"A lot of people have only been giving the Fed credit for this rally and not been talking about some of the improvement in the labor market or housing data," said Joe Bell, a senior equity analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.
"The economy in general has been on a lot better footing than perhaps people have given it credit for."
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 10.23 points, or 0.07 percent, at 15,304.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 1.30 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,649.21. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 3.04 points, or 0.09 percent, at 3,456.37.
The three major U.S. stock indexes were on track to post their first negative week in five.

Tesla jumped 4.7 percent to $97.04 after rising as high as $97.95. At the same time, shares borrowed as a percentage of outstanding shares fell to 12.3 percent as of Thursday, according to data from Markit. That's well off a level of more than 20 percent that was seen just a few weeks ago.
A wave of short-covering earlier in the month drove huge gains in Tesla. The stock's price has more than doubled since the beginning of April.
Abercrombie & Fitch was among the S&P 500's biggest losers after the teen clothing retailer cut its profit forecast and said quarterly comparable sales fell 15 percent, which it blamed in part on inventory shortages. Its stock lost 7.1 percent to $50.53.

Overall, the U.S. stock market's pullbacks have been short and shallow since November as traders have taken any weakness as an opportunity to increase long positions.
Since Wednesday, the markets have been focused on the possibility that the Fed's $85 billion per month in bond purchases will be scaled back later this year, in the wake of recent congressional testimony by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's latest meeting.
The minutes showed a degree of fracture among the FOMC's members "in terms of the approach moving forward, specifically the time frame" of the unwinding of the Fed's stimulus efforts, said Peter Kenny, chief market strategist at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Durable goods orders rose 3.3 percent in April, exceeding expectations for an increase of 1.5 percent. The data suggested that a sharp slowdown in factory output could soon run its course.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry harshly criticized Iranian authorities on Friday for eliminating hundreds of presidential candidates, suggesting that Tehran is standing in the way of legitimate, representative democracy.
Among those disqualified earlier this week by Iran's Guardian Council was former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
The purge was seen as a demoralizing blow to pro-reform groups, and Kerry declared himself "amazed" by a process under which an unelected body, accountable to no one, picked candidates "based solely on who represents the regime's interests, rather than who might represent some different point of view from the Iranian people."
"That is hardly an election by which most people in most countries judge free, fair and accessible, accountable elections," Kerry told reporters in Tel Aviv after two days of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. "The lack of transparency makes it highly unlikely that that slate of candidates is either going to represent the broad will of the iranian people, or represent a change."
Kerry also addressed the shared U.S.-Israeli concern over Iran's nuclear program, a major element of his talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.
Addressing a recent report of the U.N. nuclear agency that was highly critical of Iran, Kerry said the U.S. still hoped that the Islamic republic's leadership would enter serious negotiations over its nuclear program.
The U.S., Israel and its partners fear Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons. The Islamic republic insists it is only enriching uranium for peaceful energy and medical research purposes.
"The clock is clearly ticking," Kerry said. "Our hope is for the sake of the region, the world and the Iranian people themselves that we can have a peaceful resolution. But it is going to have to be demonstrated much more affirmatively than it has been to date that Iran is interested in that kind of solution and that they are indeed prepared to prove that their program is peaceful."
In addition to his criticism of the election process, Kerry lamented "troubling signs" that the Iranian government is cutting off Internet access to stifle criticism of how candidates were chosen.
"Ultimately the Iranian people will be prevented not only from choosing someone who might reflect their point of view, but also taking part in a way that is essential to a kind of legitimate democracy," he said.

Everybody who has tried to stack oranges in a box knows that a regular packing of spheres in a flat layer naturally leads to a hexagonal pattern, where each sphere is surrounded by six neighbours in a honeycomb-like fashion. In an article just published on-line in PNAS, researchers from Wageningen University report an exception to this rule: when small, micrometer-sized particles are placed on a curved oil-water surface, they arrange in a square pattern, as on a chessboard.
Since a number of decades, scientists are looking for strategies to create ordered crystal structures of regularly arranged small particles. Such crystals are interesting, because they can be used to control, modulate, or steer visible light in applications like lasers or other optical devices. While creating hexagonal patterns is relatively easy -- this is the natural way in which the particles tend to order -- anything different from that is much more difficult.
The team from the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Colloid Science at Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR, has now found a way to create square particle arrays. To do this, they make use of the surface tension of the underlying oil-water surface, that is the tendency of the surface to minimize its area. When a particle sticks to the liquid surface it deforms the surface somewhat, and thereby increases the total area. The surface tension acts to minimize these deformations, which can be done by clustering all the particles together.
This effect is also responsible for the clumping of breakfast cereals in a bowl of milk or of bubbles at the surface of a soft drink. The researchers have found that this effective attraction between particles resulting from the surface tension depends on how the liquid surface is curved. A slight curving of the surface already makes the interaction between particles highly dependent on their relative orientation, with attraction in two perpendicular directions and repulsion in the other directions. This is what causes the particles to arrange spontaneously in square patterns.
The researchers believe that their findings will lead to new bottom-up strategies for the design of structured materials, to be used in high-tech optical applications.
