Grim Picture of Polar Ice-Sheet Loss

Couple of things they fail to mention:

1) A lot of that ice grew in the 1940s.
http://news.ku.dk/all_news/2012/2012.5/glaciers_greenland_photos/ [news.ku.dk]
"At the time many glaciers underwent a melt similar or even higher than what we have seen in the last ten years. When it became colder again in the 1950s and 1960s, glaciers actually started growing," says Dr. Kurt H. Kj?r"

"Kurt H. Kj?r has previously worked with his colleague Svend Funder from Center for GeoGenetics on investigating sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean. Results showed that the sea ice extent has been far from stable throughout the last 10,000 years."

2) This is what NASA has to say about the "unprecedented melt":
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/greenland-melt.html [nasa.gov]

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data."

3) "Arctic Ice Threatens Northern Hemisphere
Posted on April 19, 2009 (note the date)
While the eastern Antarctic ice pack continues inexorable year over year growth, Arctic ice is greater than it?s been in the last 8 years, and showing massive expansion again this year."

4) "Antarctic sea ice grows to record extent while Arctic continues to shrink"

5) http://rs79.vrx.net/opinions/ideas/climate/.images/HolocenePeriods.png [vrx.net]
The world is warming, or cooling, depending on the time scale you look at. See for yourself.

6) The real problems are pollution in a general sense and deforestation. Given mans contribution to carbon is at best 3% and that we've removed so fucking many trees (look for yourself, fly over the Island of Borneo in google maps would be a good start, its gone, it's all gone)... what did you expect was gong to happen. "By Marlowe Hood (AFP) ? Jul 14, 2011
PARIS ? Forests play a larger role in Earth's climate system than previously suspected for both the risks from deforestation and the potential gains from regrowth, a benchmark study released Thursday has shown." http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j2BAdNIG5Q2FJlEdac1l-KXiTSCA?docId=CNG.dfe97e07f144a2d29eb615412e0c12be.a81 [google.com]

That's right, in 2011 the geniuses that know all about CO2 got the revelation that trees eat the stuff. Next time somebody calls them "experts" rememnber that.

Possibly this was in response to NASA and the NOAA bitch-slapping the IPCC by pointing out in 2012 they'd sort of ignored this fact in their "models":
"8th December 2010 13:24 GMT - A group of top NASA and NOAA scientists say that current climate models predicting global warming are far too gloomy, and have failed to properly account for an important cooling factor which will come into play as CO2 levels rise."
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/12/08/new_model_doubled_co2_sub_2_degrees_warming/ [theregister.co.uk]

Which doubt caused Gaia-dude to recant, showing he has at least a modicum of intellectual integrity:

""James Lovelock, the scientist that came up with the 'Gaia Theory' and a prominent herald of climate change, once predicted utter disaster for the planet from climate change, writing 'before this century is over billions of us will die

Bridal Guide: Top 10 Wedding Guest Complaints

By Stefania Sainato, BridalGuide.com blogger

Your wedding is about you and your fianc? getting married and sharing your love and commitment with those around you. However, I personally feel that my guests' enjoyment is paramount to that experience. That's why it's important to me to thank them for their support and ensure that I do everything in my power to make sure they have a fabulous time. With that in mind, here are the most common gripes I've heard throughout the years (and how to pre-empt them).

2012-11-28-confused_caseyfatchettphotography.jpg
"They said WHAT about my wedding?"

1. An inconvenient date.
Think it over before asking guests to forfeit spending Christmas or the Super Bowl with their loved ones to celebrate with you. Hosting during a holiday may disrupt traditions they'd prefer not to miss, and in the case of a sporting event, you may find that guests are MIA because they're sneaking off to catch the score or watch it on a nearby TV.

How to deal: If you're considering wedding at a potentially sticky time of year, check in with your closest loved ones to see if they already have set plans or would be open to attending. Some events may be easier to pull off than others (e.g. I'm getting married on Labor Day). In some cases, like Halloween, there is no other option if you're planning on throwing a full-out themed bash, so just shrug off the complainers! Also, guests may be more inclined to consider attending if they knew about the date for months in advance, so the sooner you send out that save-the-date, the better. It's also a good idea to check your local events calendar to ensure your big day doesn't compete with a parade or other large-scale community event (meet this couple who got an impromptu visit from Mr. Obama).

2. Invitation confusion.
There is nothing more frustrating than when a guest assumes they're receiving a plus-one you had no intention of inviting (we meet again, random bar hookup #22). This can happen even if you address wedding invitations using proper etiquette.

How to deal: Don't dodge the question?it will only make things more awkward. I'd recommend addressing the miscommunication kindly. Please don't tell someone who thought their children could come that you "can't have them there because weddings with kids are tacky" (true story). Avoid confusion by writing the names of the guests you want to invite on the response card and having them check off a "will attend" or "will not attend" box.

3. Seating snafus.
After the victory of compiling (and finalizing) your guest list comes the challenge of seating arrangements. It's part art, part science: Who will combust next to whom or become fast friends?

How to deal: If your guests' elbows touch and they can't easily move in between tables, you've probably crammed too many of them in one spot. Also keep centerpieces at a conversation-friendly height (no one wants to stare into an orchid all night). If you're having a hard time divvying a group of friends or family members equally, try to seat guests within the same vicinity so that they can lean over and "awww" together during the first dance instead of texting across the room.

4. Pulling out the wallet.
How much do guests dislike cash bars? Just watch wedding planner David Tutera's reaction when we asked him about them and see for yourself.

How to deal: All the pros are in agreement that cash bars are a major no-no. You'd never ask a guest to pay for a drink in your own home, so why should the wedding be any different? However, that doesn't mean you have to fork over the cash for an open bar if you can't afford it. Tutera recommends serving a limited selection of wine, beer and champagne or a couple of signature drinks.

5. Climate crisis.
Every frequent wedding-goer has experienced an event that was either scorching or freezing cold. Subjecting guests to extreme weather conditions will severely cramp their style.

How to deal: You can't help it if a weather emergency happens on your wedding day. However, there are small, fun measures you can take to ensure that guests are comfortable, beyond the obvious (plenty of shade and heat). Some ideas I love: double-duty fans that serve as programs for summer weddings and gifting your bridesmaids a shawl or faux fur wrap for winter weddings.

6. Inedible food (or lack thereof).
When I was no older than eight or nine, I went to a family party that I'll never forget. But it wasn't the bride's poufy princess dress or the heartfelt recitation of vows that I remember most. It was the McDonald's my cousin Vinny and I were allowed to eat afterwards, gleefully dipping fries into ketchup in the back of the car (because the food at the reception was so terrible).

How to deal: No bride wants to give her guests a stomachache?arrange for a food tasting before you carefully plan your menu. Not even spectacular d?cor can compensate for rubbery chicken or blink-and-you'll-miss-it shrimp. Ask about food allergies or dietary requirements ahead of time. It's also important to make sure they don't run out of food at the cocktail hour. If you're only having dessert or some light nibbles, that's fine, but please mention it to your guests (especially if you're having the party during mealtime).

7. Never-ending toasts or photo montages.
I wanted to sink into the floor at one wedding I attended where the Best Man's speech was so long-winded that the chorus of "boos" was deafening. Add a couple of glasses of champagne to the mix and you've got a recipe for disaster.

How to deal: Let the toastees know in advance that you don't want them to stress about writing a novel of a speech, so the cheat sheet version will do just fine. Your DJ can signal a musical cue if it's time to wrap things up, just like the Oscars. If you're the one giving the toast, follow these easy speech pointers.

8. DJ, please stop the music.
I've heard complaints about weddings where the thump-thumping of techno music began the second that the couple walked through the door and didn't end until the cake-cutting. (Grandma was afraid to step foot on the dance floor, lest she get clocked in the head by a stray fist pump.) At another wedding, the music was so loud that my mom escaped to the bathroom to rest her pounding head, only to find a group of other guests camped out there for the same reason.

How to deal: During your cocktail hour and dinner, play music that's low enough so that guests can hear each other without having to scream. Pump up the volume when it's appropriate, and don't seat any elderly guests right next to the speakers. Conversely, nothing is more awkward than being at a wedding where no one wants to get up and dance. If a song or genre just isn't working, ask your band or DJ to switch gears. Have fun with it: Once guests see your best "Gangnam Style" impression, they'll want to join in, too.

9. Disorganization to the max.
I once attended a wedding where the cocktail hour became two-and-a-half hours long because the bride and groom wanted more photos in the moonlight. Imagine the look on guests' faces when we finally sat down to our seats and waited another hour and a half before dinner was served.

How to deal: If you're unable to hold the ceremony and reception within two hours of each other (guilty as charged), make other accomodations for your guests. For example, my reception site has a waiting area where drinks and light refreshments will be served for early birds. If your reception/ceremony space is sprawled out, consider using sign posts to direct guests to necessary landmarks, like the dance floor and bathroom.

10. Ungracious hosts.

"We only saw the bride when she walked down the aisle!" or "It's been a year and I still haven't received a thank-you card!"

How to deal: Sound familiar? You don't have to hold up the wedding by having a receiving line. I love it when brides go from table to table to thank each person. It doesn't have to take long?even just a quick "hi and bye" makes me feel happy and appreciated.

No matter how tempting it is to scrap the thank-you cards (who has the hand stamina for that?) guests will notice if you don't send one. Split the duties with your husband and break it up into manageable chunks so that it doesn't seem so overwhelming anymore. (Note to self: Heed own advice next year at around this time.)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama argued Friday that allowing taxes to rise for the middle class would amount to a "lump of coal" for Christmas," while Republican House Speaker John Boehner declared that negotiations to surmount a looming fiscal cliff are going "almost nowhere."

Obama took his case to an audience in a Philadelphia suburb, saying that this move would present a "Scrooge Christmas" for millions of wage-earners. Speaking at a toy factory, the president said Republicans should extend existing Bush-era tax rates for households earning $250,000 or less, while allowing increases to kick in for the wealthy.

On Capitol Hill, Boehner argued that Obama's latest offer ? to raise revenue by $1.6 trillion over the next decade ? would be a "crippling blow" to an economy that is still struggling to find its footing. The Ohio Republican told reporters he would continue working with Obama to avoid hundreds of billions in tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect beginning in January if Washington doesn't act to stop it, but gave a gloomy assessment of the talks so far.

"There's a stalemate. Let's not kid ourselves," Boehner said. "Right now, we're almost nowhere."

Obama's speech came a day after his administration proposed $1.6 trillion in new taxes over 10 years, new spending for the unemployed and struggling homeowners and savings of about $400 billion in entitlement programs like Medicare. The proposal amounts to requests that were already d in Obama's Fiscal 2013 budget plan. Republicans rejected the offer as unreasonable.

Obama said he believed both parties "can and will work together" to reach an agreement to get its long-term deficit under control "in a way that's balanced and is fair."

"In Washington, nothing's easy so there is going to be some prolonged negotiations and all of us are going to have to get out of our comfort zones to make that happen," he said. "I'm willing to do that. I'm hopeful that enough members of Congress in both parties are willing to do that as well."

White House officials hoped Friday's trip would build momentum for the president's case, even as Republicans describe the outing as an irritant and an obstacle to fruitful talks. The road trip was part of a dual White House strategy of having the president's team meet with members of Congress while Obama travels the country to pressure Congress to act.

Republicans have said they are open to new tax revenue but not higher rates.

Obama spoke at the Rodon Group manufacturing facility, showcasing the company as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets.

The president joked that he's keeping his own "naughty and nice list" for members of Congress ? and only some would get a K'NEX set for Christmas.

Administration officials said the offer, presented to Hill Republicans by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, constituted much of what Obama has previously suggested in budget proposals.

One new feature in the Geithner plan is a call for increasing the nation's debt limit without the need for congressional approval. Under last year's debt ceiling deal, Obama simply had to notify Congress that he was raising the debt ceiling, a move that could be blocked only if both houses of Congress passed resolutions of disapproval that Obama could veto. The administration wants a permanent extension of the debt ceiling with a similar legislative arrangement and with no offsetting spending cuts, as demanded by Republicans.

"Unfortunately, many Democrats continue to rule out sensible spending cuts that must be part of any significant agreement that will reduce our deficit," Boehner said after meeting with Geithner Thursday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday that the proposal for $1.6 trillion in tax revenue was presented in context of a "balanced approach" to deficit reduction throughout the campaign.

"This is the way that we can ask the wealthiest Americans to pay a little bit more to deal with our deficit challenges," Earnest said aboard Air Force One as Obama flew to Pennsylvania.

"This was what the president has campaigned on for a long time and that was what president pushed for in context of the discussions with House Republicans," Earnest said.

Earnest said the proposal laid out by Geithner should not come as a surprise to anyone. Referring to comments by House Republican staffers who expressed surprise at Geithner's proposal, Earnest said, "This morning I was surprised they were surprised."

Glory Days

Lincoln's booth wasn't stuffed with new MKS's, MKT's, Navigators or any other new cars. Nope. Lincoln brought out a half dozen classics from the company's glory days. This 1956 Mark II was a design benchmark in its day. The largely handmade luxury coupe packed a 285 hp 366 cid V8 under its long hood and was owned by at least two of Hollywood's most elite?Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. The goal of this car, according to the placard in the booth was to "create the most luxurious, carefully-crafted production car in America." And that makes us wonder if the folks behind today's Lincoln have the drive to recapture the company's former glory. We sure hope so.

Applied Materials puts two non-core units under one chief

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Applied Materials, the top manufacturer of equipment for chip makers, on Wednesday named a new executive to head up two poorly performing non-core businesses - solar and display - though it said the business groups are not themselves being combined.

Applied Materials said it hired KLA-Tencor veteran Ali Salehpour to head the two groups.

Chipmakers worried about the global economy and wrestling with declining PC sales have been spending less on new manufacturing equipment sold by Applied Materials.

Applied Materials' non-core businesses have also performed poorly, and the company said in October it would cut its work force by 6 percent to 9 percent to reduce costs.

The solar panel industry has more than enough capacity to meet demand, and manufacturers of displays for TVs and other devices also face supply gluts.

Although Salehpour will head the two business groups, they will remain separate, said Applied Materials spokesman Matt Ceniceros.

Shares of Applied Materials slipped 2.26 percent in after- hours trade, after closing 2.3 percent higher at $10.60 on Nasdaq.

Watch: Minority Report Meets Judge Dredd In The Sci-Fi Short Film ...

Have a goo of this stylish, indie sci-fi short?film called ?Memorize?. It?s?set in a?dystopian future where?everyone?s?memories are recorded by chips planted in your head, so there?s no escaping the truth or the law.?The film was?written and directed by childhood friends?Eric Ramberg?and?Jimmy Eriksson?and was shot on a teeeny-tiny budget in Sweden.

Here?s the synopsis:

In 2027, everyone is implanted with a chip ? the Memorize-chip. It records everything you see, a new system to fight crime. One unit controls the system. The SSU ? Special Surveillance Unit.

The short has some cool CG tricks and some deadly camera work. The action and dialog is a bit?dodgy?at times, but given the budget it?s?definitely?worth a watch.

eNjoy!

Director?s note:

We shot this piece on a ?shoestring budget?, using just one 5D-Mark II-camera (with Canon L-series lenses). Our very first mission was actually to help another company (Quixel) with some live-action shots/scenes to simply showcase their new texture-tool for 3d-models in games and movies, but instead we came up with this concept idea and created a full blown short film. Primarily, we wanted to do something visual and entertaining to simply present this concept and showcase Quixel?s tools.

We did almost everything our self (with some 3d/texture/sfx help) and we used close friends/family members to be ?actors?, including myself playing the main character. So I guess that?s why the acting isn?t top notch and why we didn?t use so much dialogue ;) BUT we also wanted to keep it very visual, we wanted to tell a story with pictures (and UI-text of course). That was a big challenge but I think we succeeded. In the end we?re happy with the end result considering the conditions and people really seems to like it! That?s awesome to see and very rewarding! / Jimmy & Eric?

House speaker Boehner optimistic can avert fiscal crisis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House Speaker John Boehner voiced optimism that Republicans could broker a deal with the White House to avoid year-end austerity measures, saying on Wednesday that Republicans were willing to raise revenues if Democrats agreed to spending cuts.

"I am optimistic that we can continue to work together to avert this crisis sooner rather than later," the Ohio Republican told reporters. "We (Republicans) put revenue on the table as long as it is accompanied by serious spending cuts to avert this crisis."

Mandated $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts will start going into effect early next year if the Obama administration and lawmakers cannot agree on how to change the law. Top policymakers say these austerity measures could topple the economy back into a recession.

Although the White House and top congressional leaders have started negotiating, Democrats and Republicans are deeply divided on how to reduce the trillion-dollar-plus U.S. budget deficit and put the nation on a sound fiscal path.

"You're not going to grow the economy if you raise tax rates on the top two rates," Boehner said. "We're willing to put revenue on the table, as long as we're not raising rates."

President Barack Obama, who was re-elected this month after campaigning to make the wealthy pay their fair share, wants to raise taxes on the country's highest income earners. A handful of powerful corporate chief executive officers, including Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein, has come out in support of higher taxes.

Blankfein and scores of business executives have been warning Washington not to go over the "fiscal cliff" and let the austerity measures kick in and are meeting with lawmakers in Washington on Wednesday.

Democrat Erskine Bowles, who along with former Republican senator Alan Simpson crafted a plan to slash the budget deficit at Obama's request, said the business community's involvement in the fiscal debate is significant.

"It's one thing for me to talk about the effect on the rate of growth, could be as much as 4 percent, enough to put the U.S. back into recession," Bowles told reporters as he arrived for the meeting with the CEOs and Republicans.

"For (lawmakers) to hear that these companies are already slowing their hiring down ... for them to hear individually from the business leader themselves, I think, makes it real that we really got to do something," Bowles said.

Best Save Some Money With Some DIY Home Improvements.

Given all of the information resources at the homeowner?s fingertips today, choosing the best home improvement advice can be tough. Without the right information, your projects can turn into a disaster. The article below can help you get started with a number of home improvement tasks the right way.

Tie or snip extra cord length on your window blinds. It is easy for a child or pet to get caught and strangled in these cords. Make sure you do leave enough cord to maneuver the blinds, but make sure that the cord that does hang down serves no purpose. You may prevent a tragedy by removing the excess cord.

Install a pergola to give your house some character. This garden fixture will add both romance and tranquility to the aesthetics. A pergola can be installed in as little as one weekend when you enlist the help of your friends.

Many people use CFL bulbs, but few know how to deal with them when they break. Bulbs contain mercury, which is poisonous to living beings. Therefore, when one breaks, you should immediately clear out any person or pet so that the room can air out. Then clean up the glass fragments, using duct tape to carefully pick up the smallest pieces. Dispose of the shattered bulb in a double bag, and thoroughly vacuum the entire area, emptying the canister or bag immediately after.

As you plan on making home improvement projects, try to find out how to do certain things by yourself. The pros charge as much as $50 per hour, so tackling those projects on your own can save tons of money. Plus, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

Improvement Projects

Research ideas for your home improvement projects before you begin. When you stay on the lookout for projects that you think could work in your home, you give yourself many options from which to choose when it comes time to decide on which home improvement projects you want to undertake. Don?t rush into picking color schemes; you don?t want to stress yourself out.

Consider how long you plan on living in the house. If you plan to move in less than five years, it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on huge changes. You should however not overlook maintenance, but any major improvements can be left to a long time owner.

Always carefully review any home improvement contract prior to signing it. As silly as it may seem, you want to make sure everything you are agreeing to is to your approval. If you sign without realizing what the contract contains, you can lose a lot of time and money. Whether you trust him or not, read the details.

Clean with an old toothbrush you no longer use. Whether you?re cleaning the grout in your bath tub area or scrubbing engine parts, you will find that old toothbrushes do an outstanding job. Secret Plane Carried Cash Stockpile from Russia to Syria

This past summer, as the Syrian economy began to unravel and the military pressed hard against an armed rebellion, a Syrian government plane ferried what flight records describe as more than 200 tons of "bank notes" from Moscow.

The records of overflight requests were obtained by ProPublica. The flights occurred during a period of escalating violence in a conflict that has left tens of thousands of people dead since fighting broke out in March 2011.

The regime of Bashar al-Assad is increasingly in need of cash to stay afloat and continue financing the military's efforts to crush the uprising. U.S. and European sanctions, including a ban on minting Syrian currency, have damaged the country's economy. As a?result, Syria lost access to an Austrian bank that had printed its bank notes.

[RELATED: Report: Russia Stopped Syria From Gassing Rebels]

"Having currency that you can put into circulation is certainly something that is important in terms of running an economy and more so in an economy that is become more cash-based as things deteriorate," said Daniel Glaser, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes.? "It is certainly something the Syrian government wants to do, to pay soldiers or pay anybody anything."

According to the flight records, which are in English and Farsi, eight round-trip flights between Damascus International Airport and Moscow's Vnukovo Airport each carried 30 tons of bank notes back to Syria.

Syrian and Russian officials did not respond to ProPublica's questions about the authenticity and accuracy of the flight records. It is not possible to know whether the logs accurately described the cargo or what else might have been on board the flights. Nor do the logs specify the type of currency.

But ProPublica confirmed nearly all of the flights took place through international plane-tracking services, photos by aviation enthusiasts, and air traffic control recordings.?

Each time the manifest listed "Bank Notes" as its cargo, the plane traveled a circuitous route. Instead of flying directly over Turkish airspace, as civilian planes have, the Ilyushin-76 cargo plane, operated by the Syrian Air Force, avoided Turkey and flew over Iraq, Iran, and Azerbaijan.

[RELATED: Documents Show Russia Ordered Syria Shoot Down Turkish Jet]

The flight path between Syria and Russia described in the manifests.

Tensions have been rising between Syria and Turkey since the spring. Last month, Turkey forced down a?Syrian passenger plane traveling from Moscow. Turkey suspected the flight of carrying military cargo but officials have not said what, if anything, was confiscated.

If the flight manifests are accurate, a total of 240 tons of bank notes moved from Moscow to Damascus over a 10-week period beginning July 9th and ending on September 15th.

U.S. officials interviewed said evidence of monetary assistance, like military cooperation, point to a pattern of Russian support for Assad that extends from concrete aid to protecting Syria from U.N. sanctions.

In September, 2011, six months into the violence, the European Union imposed sanctions that prohibited its members from minting or supplying new Syrian coinage or banknotes. In a statement, the EU said the sanctions aimed "to obstruct those who are leading the crackdown in Syria and to restrict the funding being used to perpetrate violence against the Syrian people." At the time, Syria's currency was being minted by Oesterreichische Banknoten- und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH, a subsidiary of Austria's Central Bank.

President Obama has issued five Executive Orders that prevent members of the Assad regime from entering the United States and accessing the U.S. financial system.

"Increasingly, it is more difficult to finance the war machine and the cost of the war is becoming more expensive for the Assad regime," said one U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Targeted sanctions on those leading the violence are working and start to bite into their pocket books."

Russia appears to be helping Syria blunt the impact of the sanctions.

This past June, Reuters reported that Russia had begun printing new Syrian pounds and that an initial shipment of bank notes had already arrived. ?The report was denied by the Syrian Central Bank, which claimed the only new money in circulation were bills that had replaced damaged or worn bank notes. Such a swap, the bank contended, would have no effect on the economy.

On August 3rd, the official Syrian news agency SANA, reporting from a news conference in Moscow with Syrian and Russian economic officials, quoted Syrian officials acknowledging that Russia is printing money. Qadr Jamil, Syria's deputy prime minister for Economic Affairs, was quoted by SANA as calling the deal with Russia a "triumph," over sanctions.

Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad al-Jleilati said that Russia was providing both replacement notes and additional currency to, as SANA put it, "reflect the country's changing GDP." ?

Al-Jleilati said the money would have no effect on inflation. Printing new notes beyond simply replacing old ones could undermine Syria's already battered currency.

At the time of the meeting, at least 30 tons of currency had already been delivered, according to the flight records, and another 210 tons would be delivered in subsequent flights.

In its regional economic outlook released earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund noted that Syria's currency has lost 44 percent of its value since March 2011, trading for about 70 pounds to the dollar compared with about 47 pounds when the conflict began.

Ibrahim Saif, a political economist based in Jordan and a resident scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center said 30 tons of bank notes twice a week is a significant amount for a country like Syria.

"I truly believe it's not only that they're exchanging old money for new notes. They are printing money because they need new notes," Saif said.

"Most of the government revenue that comes from taxes, in terms of other services, it's almost now dried up," noted Saif. Yet, "they continue to pay salaries. They have not shown any signs of weakness in fulfilling their domestic obligations. The only way they can do this is to get some sort of cash in the market."

Before the unrest broke out, Syria had about $17 billion in foreign currency reserves. Saif said he and other economists in the region estimate they now have about $6-8 billion in reserves, dwindling about $500 million a month for salaries and supplies to keep the government running.

In Moscow, the Syrian finance minister had said that his country required additional foreign currency reserves, which Russia may provide in the form of loans.

"It's possible the Syrians are acquiring foreign currency reserves, either Euros or US dollars, which they would need to conduct any serious commerce," said Juan Zarate, who served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes during the Bush administration.

Zarate noted that other countries, when faced with economic sanctions, have leaned on allies for foreign currency reserves. China supplied North Korea with such funds in the past and Venezuela agreed to sell reserves to Iran.

Syria's currency is still traded on open markets, but there is limited on-the-ground information about the economy, including inflation.??

Officials at the IMF "have not been able to get direct information about Syria for at least a year," Masood Ahmed, director of the group's Middle East and Central Asia department, told reporters at a conference in Tokyo last month.

Glaser, at Treasury, declined to put a figure on Syria's current reserves but said the Syrian economy is suffering in part from a lack of tourism and a ban on oil sales, both of which provided Damascus with foreign currency. "There is significant inflation in the country. It can be caused by adding new currency or not having foreign reserves to prop up the existing currency."

The GOP's Image Problem

After back-to-back disappointing Senate elections in 2010 and 2012, Republicans (and others) are looking at 2014 and wondering not just how similar, but perhaps, how different, they could be. Two years ago, Republicans gained six Senate seats, but that gain was disappointing compared with what they could have won but weren?t able to because of exotic candidates (see Colorado, Delaware, and Nevada), and compared with the 63 seats their party was able to gain in the House. In the election just past, Republicans were unable to knock off a single Democratic incumbent, and the only Democratic seat they did manage to win was in Nebraska, one that most Democrats long ago gave up for lost. Adding insult to injury, Democrats captured three GOP-held seats, beating incumbent Scott Brown of Massachusetts and winning open seats in Indiana and Maine (counting independent Angus King as a Democrat).

A major similarity between the 2012 and 2014 cycles is the disproportionately large number of Democratic seats up for grabs: 23 Democrats to 10 Republicans in the former and an expected 20 to 13 in the latter. What is likely to be a major difference in 2014, however, is Democratic performance against Republican incumbents. This past election, Democrats managed to capture three seats from the GOP in states that Barack Obama won in 2008 (Indiana), or in both ?08 and this year (Maine and Massachusetts). As unlikely as it was that Democrats would manage to gain seats in 2012 against the odds (I believe only the hyper-audacious Chuck Schumer ever predicted a net Democratic gain), the chances of them beating the point spread in three consecutive elections seems even tougher.?

Of the 13 Republican-held seats up in 2014, only one is in a state that Obama carried: Susan Collins in Maine. Indeed, Obama wasn?t even close in any GOP-held seats in other states. Other than Maine, the best Obama performances were minus 13 points in Alabama (Jeff Sessions), minus eight in Georgia (Saxby Chambliss), minus 12 in Mississippi (Thad Cochran), and minus 12 in South Carolina (Lindsey Graham). The other states ranged from minus 16 in Texas (John Cornyn) to minus 32 in Idaho (James Risch) and minus 34 in Oklahoma (James Inhofe).

Conversely, Democrats have three seats up in 2014 in states that Obama lost by more than 15 points: minus 17 points in Louisiana (Mary Landrieu), minus 24 in Arkansas (Mark Pryor), and minus 27 in West Virginia (Jay Rockefeller). It should be noted that six-term Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., announced her candidacy on Monday at the State Capitol in Charleston. ?

In three more 2014 Democratic Senate states, Obama lost by at least five but less than 15 points: minus 11 in South Dakota (Tim Johnson) and minus 13 in both Alaska (Mark Begich) and Montana (Max Baucus). Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds started an exploratory committee in September and is expected to challenge Johnson.

There are three more 2014 Democratic Senate seats up in swing states, defined as such due to 2012 margins of five points or less: Obama minus two in North Carolina (Kay Hagan), plus three in Virginia (Mark Warner), and plus five in Colorado (Mark Udall).

That?s nine Democratic seats that are either in demonstrably swing states or in enemy territory. This also does not take into account some states that were on the bubble: Obama won Iowa (Tom Harkin) and New Hampshire (Jeanne Shaheen) by just six points each.

The remarkable thing about Senate Democrats in 2012 was their ability to go on the offensive while, by necessity, playing defense. That will be much more difficult to replicate in 2014 given the seats up that cycle.

Republicans will still face the same obstacles they have had to contend with in the last two cycles: first, getting high-quality and electable candidates to run, and second, getting them through primaries. Their challenge, in part, is that too many traditionally Republican voters?both of the moderate and the ?mainstream? variety?seem to have pulled back from active roles in GOP politics and even participation in primaries, allowing the more conservative wing of the party to become dominant. This has encouraged extreme candidates to run and has produced rather exotic and problematic candidates who often go on to lose general elections. Republicans took encouragement in Mitt Romney performing so well among independent voters, but the truth is that many of those were Republican-leaning independents?voters who used to call themselves Republicans but have edged over one notch to the left?who were uncomfortable with much of the rhetoric that has been projected in recent years.

But even if these candidates don?t open their mouths, insert grenades, and pull pins (a la Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock), they still project a more extreme image for the party that makes it incredibly difficult for more-mainstream Republicans in swing or difficult states to win. For every Akin and Mourdock, there is a Scott Brown, a Linda Lingle, or a Heather Wilson who cannot win in tough places, at least in presidential years, because of the face of the Republican Party, a threatening brand to many moderate and swing voters.?

Im not looking for sex. Im looking for a friend, someone to talk to, someone to spend time with. It is depressing being alone all the time and I am becoming more and more anti-social as the days go by. My panic attacks are getting worse too when im around other people. All I do is try to stay strong and "man the fuck up", and nothing positive comes from it. This dating site thing was a last ditch effort to try to meet people... I havent felt SO shitty and worthless than I do now. I try to rationalize it and think of reasons why not a single fucking person has even given me even a shred of a chance, like maybe I posted some bad pictures or maybe my profile is poorly written. I seriously do not understand anymore and its making me hate who I am... like Im not good enough for ANYONE, not a single fucking human being on this planet:sad: It is SO disheartening, I cannot begin to express the pain I feel on a daily basis, because I feel like such a loser, SUCH a loner.

What is the point of all this pain? What is the point of trying SO FUCKING HARD and seeing 0 results? Not even once! I cannot even justify those odds with a positive thought.

hey, OP, have you thought about maybe attending some local shroomery gatherings? the people here are great and many of them would love to be your friends, i'm sure.

i'm probably not anywhere close to you, i'm not really close to anyone, but i do have a PM box that is always open to those who wish to use it. i know you want someone to hang out with, but i can offer what i can give. if you ever need to really talk, just shoot me a PM and you can have at least a moment of my time, mostly likely more.

(don't be discouraged if i don't respond RIGHT away though, i will thoughtfully respond when i know i have sufficient time to. ^_^)

Sorry to hear your situation.? The only advice I can offer up is to figure out what hobbies and activities you enjoy outside of work, and engage in them locally.? Sharing time in a group with people who share your interest is a inherent precursor to friends.

I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend after we had moved together to a new city.? Now I've lost my social safety net, and I've gotta get back into the world again.? I'm about go embark on the same journey you NEED to embark on:

Seeking out local interests.

Go do it. Today.

Join a chess club, yoga, shooting club, local kickball league, ANYTHING.? Just go there, try to be friendly but not creepy/needy/isolated/etc.? You know, all that normal shit.

Try to have a good time.? Grab a drink or two at home before you go to the place if you want to take a edge off (just don't become reliant on this, or people might pick up on it and assume you an alcoholic).

Aw, OP, I really feel for you because I've had anxiety before and though it was caused by social situations it would still effect social situations. And when I first moved to Philly I knew literally no one, I moved in the summer before I started college and I just felt lonely and lost and it was terrible.

I think that you should seek help for your anxiety. I can guarantee you that the things you think about yourself are mainly borne out of that anxiety. Once you get to the root cause of that and learn to manage it, being social will become so much easier and thus, meeting people!
I really hope things look up for you!

And like our sun spinnin' 'round, it won't slow for you now

Don't mean to hijack, but what if you are introverted and find it hard to talk to people? I'm in a similar boat and I'm deeply involved in a couple activities. But in most cases, I don't see the same people outside the activity.

those girls on okcupid get literally 100s of messages a day. the ratio between guys to girls on there is absurd. even average looking uninteresting girls get hit up constantly so their egos are out of touch with reality. it is 100% a numbers game, if you are above average looks wise, tall, and have your life on track, still only like 1 in 20 attractive girls will respond to you, so its not just you lol.
