Your Dog Will Not Like DogTV

Dog Watching Television. Lassie is not a babysitter.

Americans spend an average of?five hours a day watching TV.?Human Americans, that is. As pet owners know, our furry wards just don't share our interest in Rock My RV With Bret Michaels, or even Cesar Millan?s Leader of the Pack. Animals may spend a lot of time in front of the television as our companions, but they rarely watch it.

The folks behind DogTV aim to change that. Billed as ?the perfect babysitter for dogs who have to stay home alone,? DogTV isn't a TV channel about dogs; it's a TV channel for them. Many dog owners already leave the tube on for their pets when they go out, but until now there?s never been programming custom-made to keep our dogs company. Airing 24 hours a day, DogTV will show short clips of canines in a variety of situations?chasing each other, riding in the car with their owners, napping, and, perversely, being visited by the mailman. There will even be animated sequences of bats flying at the screen, for some reason. The stated goal is to provide your four-legged friends with relaxation and stimulation?just like human TV!?for that portion of the day when owners aren't around to take their dogs on car rides or bat-watching.

The channel, which will cost $4.99 monthly, launches on DirecTV on Thursday; it will also be available through online streaming and Roku boxes. For those of us who suffer the guilt of leaving a dog alone for hours each day, the prospect of forking out five bucks a month to allay our dogs' separation anxiety might sound attractive. It's certainly cheaper than hiring a daily dog walker. There?s only one problem: It won't work. DogTV may attract its share of bipedal viewers?the kind of relaxation addicts who tune in to Sunrise Earth?but its target audience might as well be dog-sat by Family Feud.

One reason that dogs don't care about TV is it doesn't look like TV to them?it looks like a slideshow powered by a dim strobe light. Dogs see the world at a faster frame rate than humans do. Humans' flicker fusion?rate is?about 50-60 Hz, meaning we see the world in 50 to 60 images per second. For dogs, that rate is closer to 70-80 Hz. As Alexandra Horowitz?explains?in her best-selling book?Inside of a Dog, canines "see the individual frames [in TV] and the dark space between them too.? She continues: ?This?and the lack of concurrent odors wafting out of the television?might explain why most dogs cannot be planted in front of the television ... It doesn't look real."

Not so fast, say the folks at DogTV. That may have been true on the old tube TVs, but dogs are increasingly able to see TV images normally. How? "New LCD technology," DogTV answers.?"The refresh rate on the newer television screens is now 100Hz and up, perfect for continuous canine viewing."

Even if he can see the bats clearly, though,?Fido is likely to react to DogTV playing in the afternoon the same way you reacted to your college roommate who insisted on playing "Hey Ya!" at 3 in the morning. As?Katherine Houpt, a professor of animal behavior at Cornell University, told me, dogs don?t want to watch TV while you?re gone?they want to sleep. ?Most dogs sleep while you're gone and wake up every 20 minutes or so and get a drink of water and scratch themselves and turn around and go back to sleep,? she says.?

DogTV claims to have anticipated this problem as well and to have lined up programming "designed to work precisely with a dog?s daily routine: dogs need to play at certain times and rest in others." OK, let's assume that this problem has indeed been solved?that DogTV will have a nice afternoon block of sleeping dogs (and that canines on the West Coast don't mind napping on East Coast dogs' schedules). There's still another big reason that most dogs, even at their most energetic point of the day, rarely react to television. It's the same reason dogs' reactions to their owners talking to them over the phone are so disappointing. It's that "lack of concurrent odors" thing.

While humans are predominantly visual creatures, making TV a natural human?entertainment, ?dogs are not primarily visual ... and what interests them is typically smell first, sight second,? Horowitz writes in an email. ?Smell TV would be better.? As dog evolution expert Jon Franklin puts it, writing about his own pet in his book The Wolf in the Parlor,??Even a dog appearing on the screen, or barking out of a speaker, failed to impress. His two humans might be dumb enough to project their imaginations into the big square-eye thing, but the dog innately understood that it was pure poppycock. The television emitted no odor: Ipso facto, it was not real."

If DogTV isn?t going to work, is there anything the office-bound dog owner can do to improve his hound?s lot? If you must leave?your dog alone, take him on a long walk first, Houpt advises, to ease him into his sleepy time. And the best way to calm any separation anxiety is to do the same thing you'd do to set the mood after bringing a date back to your place: Play soft music and dim the lights so your dog feels safe. ?Classical music seems to work best," Houpt says. Instead of searching for something your dog can watch, she says, spend that five bucks on a toy that will give your dog something to do.

Vint Virga, an animal behaviorist and author of The Soul of All Living Creatures, sees things a bit differently. He told me that dogs sleep in the afternoon not strictly because of their circadian rhythms but because they?ve adapted to our schedules, and when we?re not around, ?they have nothing better to do.? He says DogTV ?might have an auditory effect, in helping calm a dog,? but that our goal as owners should be to get dogs to ?think or invent or create on their own,? and ?television isn?t gonna stimulate a whole lot of invention.? Virga says the best way to do this is to encourage foraging. Instead of just putting your dog?s food in a bowl, hide it in a few spots around the house. Alternately, you can take a cardboard box, stuff it full of newspaper and treats, poke holes big enough for the food to fall out, and you?ve got a free, homemade puzzle box. Another Virga idea is to mix your dog?s food with water and freeze it into blocks so Fido has something to lick for a while rather than just inhale. If you?re feeling particularly Julia Child-ish, you can dissolve part of a bouillon cube in water, freeze it, and make salty doggie popsicles. Yum!

Of course, even a doggy popsicle?and all the doggy creativity it may inspire?is no replacement for human companionship. As Horowitz concludes in her email, the question isn?t ?whether we should expect that even a well-designed TV program/channel is a substitute for social interaction and true engagement with the world. It is not. We owe our dogs better than leaving them home all day with little to do.? So put on some Brahms and hide a few bowls of food, but best of all, hurry home and take your best friend for a good long walk and ask him about his day.

8 Things iPad mini Buyers Need to Consider

Apple?s iPad mini, released last November, remains one of the best options in the 7-inch range of tablets and thus, it?s likely a device that many shoppers are thinking about buying. Before buying the current iPad mini though, there are a number of things that buyers must consider.

In July of last year Google struck first, launching its Nexus 7 tablet, a device that ushered in the Jelly Bean era of Android and a device that went on to have a solid one year life span. What the Nexus 7 also did was start a battle between three big name companies in the 7-inch tablet realm. For several months, the Nexus 7 was on shelves, unopposed. However, later in the year, Apple and Amazon both joined the fray.

iPad mini buyers need to consider a host of things before buying Apple's 7.9-inch slate.

iPad mini buyers need to consider a host of things before buying Apple?s 7.9-inch slate.

In September, it was Amazon that released its Kindle Fire HD, a high-end yet inexpensive upgrade to its original Kindle Fire and a device that was clearly aimed at tackling the Nexus 7 and its success. That launch was followed a few months later by Apple?s November release of its iPad mini, a device that had been stuck in the rumor mill for years but finally made an official appearance.

Like rumors suggested, the iPad mini arrived with a 7.9-inch display and a design that took after the iPhone 5?s aluminum back. The device checked in with a more expensive price tag than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, starting at $330 and going all the way up to $670 for the 64GB version of the iPad mini LTE.

The iPad mini, despite its age, remains a solid option for tablet buyers and one that those in the market for a new slate should consider. However, this is 2013, not 2012 and there are some important things that iPad mini buyers need to consider before buying Apple?s smaller iPad.

iPad mini 2

The iPad mini 2 is rumored for later this year.

The iPad mini 2 is rumored for later this year.

The first thing that prospective iPad mini buyers must consider is the new iPad mini which is expected to make its debut sometime this fall. Apple?s iPads, over the years, have seen incremental improvements and the same should be expected from the new iPad mini. Rumors suggest that the device will come with a thinner design, improved camera, and a better processor that should help with battery life and gaming.

However, maybe the most important aspect of the iPad mini 2 that buyers need to think about before buying the iPad mini is that it will likely come with a Retina Display. This is huge.

Arguably the biggest flaw of the iPad mini was its lack of a Retina Display, something that came to the larger iPad several years ago. A Retina Display would mean better looking photos, video and more and it?s likely the most sought after feature of a new iPad mini.

Apple tends to cater to its buyers so while there are rumors that an iPad mini with Retina Display could be pushed to 2014, it?s more likely that we?ll see it launch this fall.

No release date is known but given that the iPad mini was released in November, that?s a good time frame to think about. A three month wait for a exponentially better display, and tablet, is probably worth it to many buyers at this point.

Google?s Nexus 7

Buyers also must consider Google?s new Nexus 7 tablet which emerged from hiding just a few short days ago and unlike the next iPad mini, is readily available on shelves.

The Nexus 7 is a vast improvement over the last version as it not only brings a 7-inch screen that is miles ahead of the iPad mini?s display but it also adds a sleek lightweight design, the latest version of Android, a good camera, 4G LTE data speeds that can be accessed on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon and a price tag that undercuts the iPad mini in every way possible.

The new Nexus 7 is a device that potential iPad mini buyers must consider.

The new Nexus 7 is a device that potential iPad mini buyers must consider.

The iPad mini starts at $330, it hasn?t seen a price drop since its debut, while the Nexus 7 starts at $100 cheaper for its 16GB model Wi-Fi model. The 32GB model is only $50 more expensive while Apple charges $100 more. As for the LTE Nexus 7, which isn?t out yet, it will cost $350 which is $130 less than Apple?s 16GB iPad mini LTE. The Nexus 4 LTE only comes in 32GB form.

So the Nexus 7 has better specs, more wide-range LTE support and a price tag that undercuts the iPad mini. Plus, it?s available now. Indeed, this is something that iPad mini buyers need to consider.

Kindle Fire HD 2

On the heels of the Nexus 7 launch comes a huge Kindle Fire leak that includes news of a Amazon Kindle Fire HD 2, the rumored successor to the original Kindle Fire HD. Whether or not this was a controlled leak is unknown but it?s clear that Amazon?s Kindle Fire HD 2 is going to be a serious competitor to the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini.

While it only exists in rumor now, BGR?s information about the Kindle Fire HD 2 is likely credible given its track record. What this means is that consumers will more than likely be starring down a new Kindle Fire HD 2 that will come with a 1,920 x 1,200-pixel display, a Qualcomm 800 quad-core processor which is more powerful than the Nexus 7?s, 2GB of RAM, and both Wi-Fi and LTE models.

The Kindle Fire HD 2 is on tap for 2013 it seems.

The Kindle Fire HD 2 is on tap for 2013 it seems.

What?s more is that the Kindle Fire HD 2 may stay in the same price range as the company?s previous models, while also coming in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB form. That could mean that Amazon undercuts both the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 with a $199 starting price point.

S. Sudan president: Will form inclusive government

JUBA, South Sudan --?

South Sudan's president says he wants to form an inclusive government after firing his vice president and dismissing his entire cabinet last week.

Salva Kiir said Monday that he is consulting leaders of different political parties before announcing a new cabinet. On Saturday Kirr appointed his former government spokesman as his foreign minister, the only appointment made so far.

The recent government shake-up in Africa's newest country followed reports of a power struggle within the ruling SPLM party, especially between Kiir and former Vice President Riek Macher.

Both Macher and the dismissed leader of the ruling party, Pagan Amum, have expressed interest in running for president in South Sudan's 2015 election.

Kiir on Monday lashed out at his political opponents, saying that now "is not the time for campaigns."

Even Nokia thinks there?s a Windows Phone app gap of sorts

Microsoft?s Windows Phone platform may boast 165,000 mobile apps but Nokia thinks there?s more work to be done in order to grow sales. Some key quotes from Nokia Vice President Bryan Biniak in an interview with International Business Times last Friday?highlight the ?app gap? challenge while also setting the bar higher for mobile app experiences. Here are a few key quotes from Biniak:

?To give you a reason to switch, I need to make sure the apps that you care about on your device are not only on our phones, but are better. I also need to provide you unique experiences that you can?t get on your other devices.?

This is the same point I?ve made in the past when discussing the challenge facing BlackBerry. And it?s why that company and Microsoft are currently fighting to be the third smartphone platform that?s well behind iOS and Android: The incumbents have not only the apps that people want today but they have the developer support for apps people will want tomorrow.

?People rely on applications for their day-to-day life and if you don?t have something which I use in my day-to-day life I?m not going to switch [operating systems] because I don?t want to compromise the way I live my life just to switch to a phone.?

There are plenty of happy Windows Phone customers that have every app they need, but I?m not one of them ? even though I like the interface and many of the new handsets. However, I fit directly in the example that Biniak provides: There are a few key apps I use daily that simply aren?t on Windows Phone yet. So why would I, or anyone in the same situation, switch?

That?s a challenge that Microsoft continues to face because current smartphone owners are used to having the apps they want and need. Those on feature phones may better fit the Windows Phone target customer since they?re not yet app addicts. And that could be why Nokia has released a number of relatively low-cost Windows Phone handsets over the past two years: Its best bet to grow hardware sales may be in the low- to mid-range handset markets.

nokia-lumia-610-featured

Biniak continues to suggest that the challenge for Windows Phone isn?t hardware, nor the platform itself. It?s about the apps. Nokia seems to be doing its part when it comes to hardware but Biniak almost sounds frustrated by the software side of things:

?We are releasing new devices frequently and for every new device, if there is an app that somebody cares about that?s not there that?s a missed opportunity of a sale.?

He?s right: If a potential customer finds that a shiny new Lumia can?t run an app they want, why would the experience turn into a sale? It likely won?t.

Much of this situation has to do with timing. Had Microsoft been quicker to migrate away from Windows Mobile sooner, the platform would have arrived prior to iOS and Android becoming the smartphone behemoths they are today. Now that these two account for more than 90 percent of smartphone sales, getting consumers ? and developers, for that matter ? to make a switch is much more difficult.

(AP) ? Blair Underwood is returning to series television in a remake of "Ironside," which shares few similarities with the original series that starred Raymond Burr.

The character's name and job as a detective is the same, and he uses a wheelchair after being paralyzed from the waist down.

The original series, set in San Francisco, ran on NBC from 1967-75. The reboot is based in New York City and filmed in Los Angeles. NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the show that debuts Oct. 2.

Underwood said he got used to the wheelchair by using one at home while learning his lines. The role is especially meaningful to him because his mother, Marilyn, is in a wheelchair as the result of multiple sclerosis.

(AP) ? A new documentary on former Olympic figure skating rivals Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding that includes an exclusive interview with Kerrigan will air during NBC's Winter Olympics coverage in February.

Mary Carillo will interview both women on the 20th anniversary of their dramatic showdown at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

NBC's program will air three months after ESPN's "Tonya and Nancy" documentary, set for Nov. 5. That film includes new interviews with Harding, although ESPN Films said earlier this week it is still trying to persuade Kerrigan to grant an interview.

Both documentaries will recount the Jan. 6, 1994, incident in which Kerrigan was clubbed on the knee after practice for the U.S. championships in a plot masterminded by Harding's ex-husband. At the Olympics, Kerrigan won a silver medal and Harding finished eighth.

In the NBC program, Carillo interviews both Kerrigan and Harding about what they learned and where they are now.

Kerrigan has shunned the spotlight since retiring to focus on raising her three children. Harding is married with a child and has participated in several sports and reality shows.

Violent clashes between Egyptian security and Morsi supporters

At least 38 protesters have died and 180 have been wounded as Egyptian security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

Clashes erupted early Saturday in Cairo between security forces and supporters of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi, killing at least 38 protesters and overwhelming field hospitals with the wounded, a medic said, in an outburst of violence that deepens the battle lines in the country's political crisis.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb told The Associated Press that a government hospital near the clashes has received 21 dead and 180 wounded so far. The difference in death tolls could not be immediately reconciled.

The carnage overnight near the month-old sit-in held by Morsi's supporters is likely to harden the resolve of the deposed leader's camp, who described the latest bloodshed as a "massacre." On the other side of the political divide, the military-backed interim leadership appears to feel emboldened to move against Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood following mass rallies on Friday in support of a crackdown against the ousted president and his Islamist allies.

The clashes began after hundreds of Morsi supporters moved out of their sit-in outside of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque in east Cairo late Friday. One group began to set up tents on an adjoining boulevard, where they planned to stay for at least three days, said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Brotherhood spokesman. At the same time, another group of protesters marched toward a nearby overpass, where they were met by volleys of tear gas from the police. The demonstrators responded by hurling rocks and stones at the security forces.

The confrontation quickly turned bloody. At first, doctors said half a dozen were killed in the clashes, mostly by birdshots and some live ammunition. At the crack of dawn, the pace of casualties picked up and a nearby field hospital was unable to cope with the influx, according to Yehia Mikkia, a doctor at the makeshift facility. He said hundreds were wounded.

Mikkia, the field hospital doctor, said 38 people had been killed, and that most of the casualties had wounds to the upper part of the body. He said the number of dead is likely to be higher because other casualties were transported to different hospitals.

At the makeshift morgue at the sit-in, supporters chanted "The people want to execute the butcher," referring to army chief and Defense Minster Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, as they ushered the dead out to the hospitals.

In footage broadcast on Al-Jazeera Mubashir Misr TV, the bodies of more than 12 men shrouded in white cloth were laid out on the floor of the field hospital. Pools of blood colored the floor red.

There's a US college that does not charge tuition or fees!

College tuition these days just seems to be climbing and climbing. Some private institutions charge upwards of $50,000 per year. However, there is a college that charges just $980 for tuition.

Berea College was founded in 1855. It has about 1,660 students and 140 acres of campus in Berea, KY. It was the first interracial and coeducational college in the south. And most importantly, it charges barely any tuition.

Instead, it relies on a large endowment. And students are required to work at least 10 hours a week at a campus job. It offers degrees in 28 fields and is a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It has 16 varsity programs. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Hosts seek to arrest South Africa's momentum

Match facts

Sunday, July 28, 2013
Start time 1430 local (0900 GMT)

Big picture

After South Africa asserted some control over their fate in Sri Lanka, on what was perhaps the driest pitch of the tour to date, it has now fallen to the hosts to arrest the momentum their opponents have gleaned from a big victory. South Africa's batsmen appeared to have finally cracked the answer to the slow surfaces that sunk them in the first two matches, as they sought to graft securely before embracing aggression very late in the innings.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe then provided the experience that had been missing from South Africa's attack, as he bowled in fearsome tandem with Morne Morkel, to scupper Sri Lanka in the early overs. The pitch being prepared for Sunday looks almost identical to the surface that Friday's match was played on, and South Africa are unlikely to change their game plan or personnel, save for men drifting in and out of the team due to injury. The visitors are also finally fielding at a standard close to their lively best as well, despite the odd missed opportunity.

Sri Lanka's middle order, meanwhile, continues to face criticism at home, having failed once more to spur a meaningful surge on a day when the top order failed. Dinesh Chandimal had some luck during his 65-ball 29, before departing softly, gloving to Quinton de Kock, and he never really had the measure of the surface. Angelo Mathews appeared more at ease while batting, but surrendered his wicket with an irresponsible pull, soon after debutant Angelo Perera had perished in a similar fashion. Given the middle order's track record in the last two months, even a South Africa attack missing Dale Steyn will feel confident that there are only three men among Sri Lanka's batsmen who are capable of playing match-winning innings.

Mathews must also now reassert himself at the helm, after Chandimal's brush with success. In all three matches Chandimal has captained so far (including a Twenty20 against Bangladesh), he has been an eager but astute leader, though his place in the ODI XI is far less secure than Mathews'. There is no real threat to Mathews' captaincy from within the side, but if he cannot complete his first series victory after being handed a 2-0 lead, pressure may begin to build.

Players to watch

Thisara Perera had been dropped for the tri-series in the West Indies prior to this tour, but has returned emphatically and is now the leading wicket-taker in the series, as well as the third-highest run-getter. His six-ball blitz against Robin Peterson showcased his power and, on a pitch that may produce another low-scorer, he may again be called upon to blast Sri Lanka to a challenging total. The major weakness in his game appears to be death bowling, which he will need to improve if Sri Lanka continue to play only one specialist pace bowler in future.

David Miller proved he was more than just a big hitter on Friday, when he constructed an innings with care, before finally launching the kind of assault his cricket has become famous for. He worked the spinners cleverly alongside de Villers, playing cautiously against Ajantha Mendis, whom he had only seen briefly at the IPL. His unbeaten 85 is South Africa's only half-century in the series, and Sri Lanka will now look at his game more closely, as they seek to discover weaknesses.

Pitch and conditions

Kandy had its sunniest day in a week on the eve of the match, but the weather is likely to return to its pattern of intermittent showers on Sunday, according to the forecast. The pitch appears to be another slow turner.

Team news

Lahiru Thirimanne is fully fit and will probably play, pushing Angelo Perera out of the XI*. Other than that, though, Sri Lanka are likely to remain unchanged.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1. Upul Tharanga, 2. Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3. Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4. Mahela Jayawardene, 5. Dinesh Chandimal, 6. Angelo Mathews (c), 7. Lahiru Thirimanne, 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Rangana Herath, 10. Lasith Malinga, 11. Ajantha Mendis

South Africa are optimistic Hashim Amla will play on Sunday, after he passed a mini fitness test and batted productively in the nets on the eve of the match. He will be thoroughly assessed before the start of play on Sunday, as will Ryan McLaren, who is nursing a strained hamstring he picked up while fielding in the third ODI.

AB de Villiers also said that he enjoyed leading the side without the gloves on and Alviro Petersen may make way for Amla's return, leaving keeper Quinton de Kock in the XI.

South Africa (probable): 1. Hashim Amla/ Alviro Petersen, 2. Quinton de Kock (wk), 3. JP Duminy, 4. AB de Villiers (c), 5. Faf du Plessis, 6. David Miller, 7. Robin Peterson, 8. Farhaan Berhardien, 9. Ryan Mclaren/Chris Morris, 10. Morne Morkel, 11. Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Stats and trivia

  • The team batting first has won all three matches so far in the series.
  • The highest successful chase in 11 matches at Pallekele has been Sri Lanka's 200 for 3 against New Zealand, who had set them 198 in a rain-reduced match.

Quotes

"He has turned out to be a brilliant allrounder for us - with bat and ball. It looked like he was batting on a different strip."
Angelo Mathews on Thisara Perera's impact in the series.

"I'm not carrying an injury at all. Quinton's used to keeping and is a good young keeper. We thought I'd have more to add as a fielder than him. Not that I rate myself more than him - but the guys tend to do. From a captaincy point of view, I have more time with my decision-making and time to communicate with the bowlers."
AB de Villiers on leading the side after being freed from wicketkeeping duties.
