Owning Your Own Website - Here's Why You Should Be Driving ...

Video Transcription

Hey guys, John here for Bring the Donuts, and today I want to talk about the importance of ?Having your own website?.

Now a good friend of mine is involved in selling antique furniture and restored bicycles online, ...actually I guess he probably sells a lot of stuff offline as well but, I wanted to touch on a few things that I've seen him doing over the past month or so, and share some advice and tips that I have with you in regards to some of the mistakes he's currently making.

Okay, so every now and then I'll see this particular friend of mine share something on Facebook, which might be a link that points me to Gumtree or Ebay, or some sort of online classified website where quite often the links don't work, but that's probably for another video ? but the point I want to make is that, each and every time he's trying to promote something on his website, ?.well, promote something that he has for sale, he's sending me to a different location each and every time.

Alright, so let's now go over a few tips that I can share with you in terms of how to about promoting your website, your products and services ? and doing it the right way.

Firstly, you should always have your own website. You should always be promoting your own products and services from something that you own and control. This friend of mine that's promoting his own stuff ? like I said, I'm always being sent to different locations across the web and I cant help but wonder, does he have his own site?

If you don't have your own website, how are your customers going to find you?

It really doesn't make sense to be promoting your stuff on platforms that you don't control, because firstly there are no assets, you don't own any assets, nothing can become saleable, if you're promoting across other platforms. Secondly, most importantly, because you don't own these assets, they can be removed, locked or taken away from you at any time.

Okay, next point, and this works in with having your own website, and that is building your brand. Whenever you're promoting products and services online, you should always be promoting them from your own site, and doing this with your brand in mind. Much like, big sites like Amazon, Paypal, Ebay and Google, they've all worked very very hard to establish their brands and because of this, people simply go to those locations ? they know of them, so if you're doing any form of business online, not only own your own assets, but work hard to build your own brands. You can do this with catchy domain names, or a nicely designed logo, or even using certain colours on your site. All of these things can help people immediately identify your brand and this can help drive sales and build trust and establish you as an authority online.

My last point, as I said at the beginning of this video ? this friend of mine has essentially got this whole business model reversed, in that he's using Facebook to send people out to different locations? across the web. I want to share with you something that I learnt from my own mentor about 6 months ago, and the way he describes it, makes it very very easy to understand.

Now by having your own website, if you think about it like a bicycle wheel, your website is the hub, and that sits right in the centre, and each and every place where you promote your stuff online, are basically the spokes in that bicycle wheel ? and these all lead in, back towards your website. So to begin with you should take a promotion, or something that you intend on selling or offering on your own website, publishing that to your website first and then syndicating that across channels, such as Pinterest, and Youtube, and so forth ?.Facebook, social media of course. But essentially that's the concept, and that's how it works ? you put your website in the middle and you syndicate outwards, and that all helps drive traffic in towards your site. You can only do that, if you have your own website.

Okay, that's it for today's video. Remember, always own your own website. Focus all of your energies to driving traffic to your own site, and building your own brand. If you've enjoyed this video, please share it with your friends. If you have a question or a comment, please post it below, if you haven't yet already, please subscribe, and if you'd like to see me cover anything in particular, please get in touch and I'll shoot a video for you, just like this one.

Thanks so much for watching, take care.
