2012: A Mixture Of Joy And Sorrow For The Entertainment Industry ...

In less than 24 hours, the year 2012, will wind to an end. Though the year is ending with glitz and glamour, it was spiced with sadness in the entertainment industry. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM brings you some popular incidents of 2012.

The Nigeria entertainment industry has come of age and 2012 has seen great achievement both in the movie and music sectors.

However, events of the last 12 months have thrown up some bad and ugly sides of the year for the entertainment industry.

Entertainment really helped in shaping the minds of many youths in Nigeria especially at a time when the country is going through her trying times.

The Music industry
Some big wigs in the Nigeria music industry have given their support to young talented artistes, projecting and making them more known than ever.

Banky W known as the crown Prince of African Soul/R&B, made a big hit with his? signed E.M.E acts, WIZKID and SKALES This has further solidified the niche he has carved for himself.

This year alone, there were big collaboration between Nigeria artistes and some notable names in the industry. These people are the shakers of American music industry.

Rick Ross had a big collaboration in ?Beautiful Onyiye,? one of the best collabos we have seen in a long time in Nigeria after featuring Akon.

The duet by Duncan Mighty and Shaggy is hoping to be a big one in 2013 as it didn?t get much of the anticipated publicity it deserved.?

Chris Brown came on a tour to Nigeria where he performed in Lagos on December 22, 2012 with Wizkid on stage dancing the Azonto. A memorable day for the young lad.

Also for Keri Hilson it will always be a day to remember when she was in Nigeria 2012 for the Face of Sofa at the International Conference center, Abuja, where she thrilled the audience with good songs and beautiful dance steps.

Nigeria artistes won various categories of? awards internationally and locally for their effort this year, especially as it concerns improvement in delivery, real life images and graphics. More in the area of entertainment, record labels like Akon?s Konvict Music with P-Suare and D?Banj?s? Good Music held their own together.

Videos have improved and there are more musical and lyrical inventions by some artistes like Azonto (Wizkid), Iyanya(Kukere), and P-Suare just compensated their fans with...

So the music industry has really achieved a lot and hoping to see more in 2013.

Nollywood? Visit Nollywood:
2012 witnessed the coming of the angel of death to the Nigeria film industry with notable faces passing on and many in critical health conditions.

Some called it a plague as the number of deaths rising.

E-train investigation has it that no fewer than 10 actors and actresses died in 2012.

The rate of death is like in the ratio of one death per month.

You will be shocked to know that one more of your actors is no more.

Otolo:
Report reaching the desk has it that popular Yoruba actor, Otolo has died. According to a report by Nigerialfims.com the comic actor died on Wednesday December 26, (Boxing Day) making it a closure of numerous deaths in the movie industry.

Also David Ihezie:
He was a veteran actor, who died in his Enugu base after a short battle with Arthritis on January 19. He was in his 70s.

Brown Atienwen:
Popular Benin-based seasoned Nollywood actor and staff of the Edo State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). He was unable to pay the sum of N150,000 for a major operation. The cause of his illness was unknown. He died in October,2012.

Peter Eneh:
The news of Pete Eneh was that of an ailment which spread like cancer and led to the amputation of one of his legs. He later died after suffering from complications from the amputation of his leg. The actor, who was diabetic, allegedly sustained some injury in 2011, which degenerated to a sore and refused to heal.

He spent three months at the hospital before he the amputation of his leg was advised to avoid the infection spreading to other parts of his body. The amputation took place on Wednesday, October 24, after all efforts to save the leg was unsuccessful.

Lekan ?Lekinson? Oladipupo:
Popularly known in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood as Georgio Lekinson, Lekan Oladipupo died on January 24 in Osogbo, Osun State, while battling a heart related illness.

Dento:
Yoruba comic actor, Hammed Odunla, better known as Dento, also succumbed to death on Monday, August 6, after months of battling with stroke.

Cassandra Gabriel:
Fast rising actress, Cassandra, otherwise known as Sisi Caro in a popular situational comedy, Face2Face, passed on recently due to complications from an illness suspected to be cancer.

Akin Ogungbe:
Veteran Yoruba actor, Akin Ogungbe, popularly known in the industry as Ireke Onibudo, died on November 28 at his Iberekodo residence, in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He was aged 78. According to one of his sons, Femi Abiola Ogungbe, his father was not ill but died of old age.

The actor was the founder of National Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) and the oldest actor in the Yoruba film industry. He is survived by 15 widows with over 40 children and numerous grandchildren.

Enebeli Elebuwa:
It was a sad Wednesday, when the death of veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa hit tinsel town. The actor, who had been bedridden with stroke for two years, died in an Indian hospital in New Delhi. It was reported that his health deteriorated when he couldn?t afford to pay for medical attention. It was also gathered that the stroke came as a result of uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which also affected his brain.

With the number of casualties in this league, it is instructive to note that the major ailments were either stroke, diabetes or heart related issues.

Meanwhile, medical experts have proffered solutions to the rising number of deaths in the film industry.

According to Dr. Justin Ihejieto of St. James Hospital, Olodi Apapa, the avalanche of deaths in the industry was a multi-factorial issue.

?It is not really a behavioural lifestyle problem, though it is a factor. Excessive alcohol intake, irregular eating pattern, weight gain, lack of exercise, lack of checkup and so on may be responsible. We hope the living would take this advice into 2013, since most of them are busy going from one location to another, they do not bother to go to the hospital for checkup at least once a year; so the accumulation of all of these and more could possibly cause health hazards.

At present, great thespians, including Ngozi Nwosu, Ifeanyi Dike, Prince Uche, Emma Edokpai, Victor Eze, who acted the role of Alika in the rested Fuji House of Commotion, are currently battling with stroke, diabetes and heart related problems.

Make up Break ups:
Funke Akindele?s glamourous celebrity wedding will continue to be talk of town due to the dignitaries and Nigeria entertainers that witnessed it. Exactly one week after, another popular face in the Nigerian entertainment industry tied the? knot June 2, 2012, in the person of dancer Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau (Kaffi) with live band drummer Joseph Adakole Ameh who tied the nuptial knot at the Bespoke Centre at Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

Also, popular hip hop star Naeto C got hooked to his heartthrob Nicole in the midst of friends and family including the Koko master himself, D?banj.

He was at the rapper?s white wedding which took place on Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Lekki, Lagos.

Meanwhile, before now, it is the women side that is most hit by this breakup syndrome affecting the marital homes of our movie stars, but now, going by the revelation of the prominent actor, Joseph Benjamin, it?s the men sector that is now being hit.

The actor opened up on his relationship status in an interview on Reel Radio.?About my marriage, it has been going through crisis which I prefer not to talk about that is why I have kept it away from the public to wave off controversies. I am no longer in my marriage; we are separated. I have two wonderful children ? a 10- year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.

They are an integral part of my life; their mum and I have a very good arrangement on how to balance their lives to make sure that psychologically they are stable and unaffected by our separation.? That was one of the sad moments of 2012.

There are more activities that shaped 2012 that are not mentioned so far, but E-train believe you have had a wonderful time reading our informative analysis.

But for the deaths, 2012 as it goes, has been a great year for Nigeria Entertainment industry and hopefully, 2013 will be a greater year for the industry.

Homeschooling: You Can Teach Your Kids At Home | Doc's ...

More and more parents are opting to educate their children at home to avoid the many inadequacies of public schools. But there are some downfalls to homeschooling that must also be avoided. This article contains needed information if you plan to provide the homeschooling experience for your kids.

There are homeschooling groups in many areas. You will have to do research to see if any are available where you live. You can get more information and advice by attending these meetings. You can save on the high cost of books by trading them amongst other parents.

Lay out your reasons for wanting to homeschool on paper. You already know why you have made this choice, but writing it down will help make things clear for your spouse. Write down the goals for your school, the reasons you think this is important and questions that you hope to find answers to. You can explain yourself more clearly.

TIP! Don?t just dive into homeschooling; prepare you and your child by attending some conferences or workshops. Teaching can become overwhelming! There are classes and seminars that will provide you with the inspiration and guidance you need to ensure that your venture with homeschooling is successful.

Are you ready for the financial sacrifices that come from homeschooling? For instance, it will require one parent to be at home and not working. If you choose to do it, you need to think about the time away from accomplishing your daily chores around the house, and hiring services such as grocery delivery will cost you more.

Go on excursions with other local homeschooling families. This simultaneously provides hours of fun and socialization time. Additionally, you will get a group discount!

Find some other families that home school for support. Homeschooling is a growing trend. You might be surprised at the number of other homeschoolers you find in your area. You might also look online for support or read blogs for advice. These families can be a great resource for support, ideas, materials and socialization. This will also give your children the opportunity to make friends. Having a support group can make your schooling a smoother experience.

TIP! If it?s within your budget, think about hiring someone to help around the house. Homeschool takes a lot of time, so that you don?t have as much time or energy to do housework and errands.

You should have fun when you are homeschooling your kids. If one subject in particular interests you, learn everything you can about it. Search for learning resources online, and visit your community library for copious amounts of free information. Use this information to help educate your child. That is a situation where everyone wins.

A diary or journal is a great teaching tool for a child. You can keep track of not just their progress, but their whole life. This allows them to provide their own perspective on things. Encourage them to add descriptive drawings, photos or even small objects affixed to the pages. This can be a great piece to your child?s portfolio that you can look back on for years to come.

You must find ways to keep things interesting for your children because it will be very easy for them to get bored. Your children will spend a lot of time with you, and making it interesting should be a priority. Homeschooling forums are replete with great, fun ideas.

TIP! If you?ve joined a homeschooling community, use all the resources they provide. You may get free materials, field trip assistance, music lessons and additional resources.

Create a pros and cons list about public school and homeschooling. This list will ensure that your child is getting effective homeschooling. The list can be a check list of certain situations to avoid, and what areas to be your focus as part of their education. Place it someplace safe, where you can easily reference it.

Plan meals in advance. Homeschooling takes a lot of time. Therefore elaborate meal plans are likely to become unachievable. Most of the time, you will have to resort to fast food. Prepare several meals over the weekend and freeze them. That will help you avoid an evening rush. You can make a lesson out of it by getting your children to assist you. Then when it is time to eat all you will need to do is thaw it out and reheat it.

It is important to be clear about your class schedule with your children. When school is over, allow them the freedom of choosing when they should do additional studies. For example, let your plan an activity such as going to the movies or to a theme park to help maintain a sense of family.

TIP! New information about homeschooling is always coming out. Internet groups composed of homeschooling parents are widely available.

Ensure that you are firm when it comes to your child completing homework. You don?t want your children falling behind. It is important for kids to learn how to compartmentalize time.

When you take a vacation with your kids, use them for teaching purposes. For example, take family trips to historical sites, zoos and botanical gardens, and museums. Take a day or two of each trip for learning. Your entire family will enjoy the togetherness and the opportunity to learn new things.

It is easy to overextend yourself with household chores in addition to the time and effort you need to invest in your homeschooling efforts. Never fear asking your spouse or partner to chip in with the housework. If you personally have the resources to hire external help, consider it.

TIP! You need to be dedicated to homeschooling. Lots of well-meaning loved ones are negative about homeschooling.

After reading this article, homeschooling seems more possible. Use the information you?ve learned here, and you will have no problem starting the homeschooling experience. You will also be happy knowing your children will be taught well.

Because of all the knowledge that exists on fast pay plan, your job is to pick out the right information for you. The most important thing is to learn all you can. Whenever you have learned all the information you need, you can then formulate a better plan.

I know that no-one in our family ever has or will, but I thought that was just us. But it seems that you're correct and we aren't that different to many others it seems.

I've said it before: there is only one innovator when it comes to consumer technology these days, and it ain't Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Sony, Acer, Lenovo...

pretty amazing, should have bought tons of apple stock in the 80's when they were on the brink of bankruptcy.
my wife corrupted me with her 2006 MacBook, since then got me the first ipod nano, from there I was hooked and got my first iPhone.. I've been addicted since then.

I used apple ii's in primary school, as well as Mac classics.. never thought we'd be here today writing this on this digital touchscreen interface.. err iPad.

LV police suspect casino worker killed young girl

Brenda Stokes Wilson appears in Clark County Justice Court, Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, in Las Vegas. Wilson is accused of slashing a Bellagio blackjack dealer and is suspected of kidnapping and slaying 10-year-old Jade Morris. Wilson is accused of slashing a Bellagio blackjack dealer and is suspected of kidnapping and slaying 10-year-old Jade Morris. This booking photo provided by the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nev,. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, shows 50-year-old Brenda Stokes. Police in Las Vegas have issued a plea for information about 10-year-old Jade Morris after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman who is thought to be Stokes. Stokes was arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. This undated photo provided by the Las Vegas Police Department shows Jade Moris, 10, who police are searching for after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The woman, Brenda Stokes, 50, made her first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Las Vegas Police Department)

(AP) ? Police suspect that a casino worker killed a 10-year-girl before going to a Las Vegas resort and allegedly slashing the face of a co-worker with razor blades.

The search for Jade Morris ended Friday afternoon when officials confirmed that it was her body that was found a day earlier in an undeveloped housing tract.

The Clark County coroner's office said she died of multiple stab wounds. Jade was last seen Dec. 21 with family friend Brenda Stokes Wilson, who picked her up to go Christmas shopping.

Wilson, 50, returned the car she had borrowed for the outing to a friend two hours later. Jade never came back. Investigators later found blood on the driver's door and steering wheel of the 2007 Saab sedan.

Later that night, Wilson was wrestled to the ground with razors in each hand after allegedly slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio casino.

A judge raised her bail from $60,000 to $600,000 Friday morning after she was identified as the prime suspect in the child's killing.

"It's no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris," prosecutor Robert Daskas told Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure at the hearing.

Later Friday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said investigators were still moving forward.

"As soon as we get all the evidence in that we need, we'll book her on the murder charges," he said.

Wilson has been jailed since the 21st on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

Police said she offered no help in the search for the missing girl. Murder and kidnapping charges could get her life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

On Thursday, Las Vegas police responding to a 911 call found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

On Friday evening, Jones called the slaying "unfathomable."

"Even having our jobs, we still can't wrap our heads around this," he said. "A lot of people think that just because of our positions we can understand it, but we can't."

In court Friday morning, Wilson stood flanked by eight police officers as her lawyer, Tony Liker, clutching a Bible and a copy of the charging documents, asked the judge to postpone arraignment until Wednesday to give him time to meet with Wilson.

Wilson, who had been identified by police and prosecutors as Brenda Stokes, told the judge Friday that her full name was Brenda Stokes Wilson.

Jade's father, Philip Morris, was removed from court Wednesday by armed court officers after shouting questions about his daughter's whereabouts to Wilson. He did not attend Friday's hearing.

The two dated for several years, and Jade had a long and trusting relationship with Wilson, according to the girl's grandfather, Philip Tucker.

Tucker said Philip Morris lived in Billings, Mont., and worked at a Flying J truck stop for more than a year. He would stay with Wilson when he visited Las Vegas, Tucker said.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying. But Tucker said Wilson appeared to believe that the face-slashing victim had become romantically involved with Philip Morris.

Wilson picked up Jade for their shopping expedition around 5 p.m. Later, she got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio. She allegedly attacked her co-worker, Joyce Rhone, at around 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth.

Wilson told investigators that she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

iPad dominates tablet Web traffic among tablets

1 hr.

Those spunky?Android tablets may have made big gains on Apple's flagship slate in recent months in terms of sales, but competitors still have a long way to go when it comes to actual usage. So says Chitika Insights, an ad and analytics firm that claims the iPad still accounts for a full 87 percent of all tablet Web traffic.

For every 100 iPad impressions Chitika receives, it only receives 14.75 impressions from all other tablets combined, VentureBeat reports.

As you can see in the chart below, the Kindle Fire family is far and away the second most popular tablet on Chitika's ad network, and it generates more than 20 times less traffic than the iPad, accounting for just 4.88 percent of all impressions. The vaunted Google Nexus tablets? Just 1.22 percent.

Early reports peg Microsoft's Surface tablet as the most-used Windows 8/RT device, but it only accounts for 0.22 percent of all tablet traffic by Chitika's count???just 0.04 points ahead of the defunct HP TouchPad's share. No wonder Microsoft has broadened the Surface's distribution.

Android tablets, on the other hand, have been on a hot streak of late. Google-powered tablets managed to knock the iPad's market share down to "just" 50.4 percent in the third quarter, which was the Apple tablet's smallest chunk since its launch.

One strong quarter is just the start of an uphill battle for Android, however. As Chitika's numbers show, years of utter dominance by the iPad have given it a substantial lead when it comes to actual usage. It will be interesting to see if the release of the iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad chew into Android's gains when the fourth-quarter sales numbers are released.

Police investigating the disappearance of a 10-year-old Las Vegas girl expect to know Friday if it was her body that was found in an?undeveloped housing tract.?

Authorities couldn't immediately confirm that the body belonged to Jade Morris when it was discovered Thursday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said.?

But, "I can tell you that the likelihood is that this is our victim," Jones said.?

Coroner Michael Murphy said he expected to make a positive identification Friday, the same day that Brenda Stokes, the woman Jade was last seen with, appears in court on charges that she slashed a co-worker with razor blades at the Bellagio resort casino.?

Stokes picked up the girl at about 5 p.m., and two hours later returned to another friend the red 2007 Saab sedan that she borrowed for the shopping trip, Jones said.?

Later, Stokes got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip, where she was arrested after authorities say she attacked a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, with a razor in each hand as Rhone dealt blackjack about 9:30 p.m.?

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth. A police arrest report said Rhone also had several smaller cuts around her right eye.?

Clark County Detention Center

Brenda Stokes, 50, is shown in a booking photo.

Records show that Stokes was being held on $60,000 bail at the Clark County jail on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.?

She told a judge Wednesday that she had not obtained a lawyer. She was due again in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday morning.?

The arrest report says casino video shows Stokes attacking Rhone before a casino patron and security officers intervene. Officer Marcus Martin said the video is evidence that may be shown by prosecutors in court but will not be made public by police.?

Police said Stokes later told investigators that she attacked Rhone over harassing phone calls and an unspecified betrayal that ended their seven-year friendship.?

Stokes also told police she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."?

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Stomach bug knocks Nadal from Australian Open

(AP) ? Just when Rafael Nadal had recovered from a knee injury, a stomach virus has delayed his return to tennis by a couple of months.

Nadal announced Friday he will miss next month's Australian Open and probably won't play again until the end of February. The Spaniard said he needs time to recover from the virus that already prevented him from coming back this week at Abu Dhabi.

Nadal has been sidelined since June with a knee injury, which forced him to miss the London Olympics and U.S. Open. He had planned to rejoin the ATP tour at the Qatar Open in Doha next month before the Jan. 14-27 Australian Open, but pulled out of both.

"We just hope he gets better quickly and we see him back on the tour as soon as possible," Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said. "Tennis fans across the world have been missing him."

While he is expected to recover from the virus in time for the year's first Grand Slam tournament, Nadal and his team said he wouldn't have the proper preparation for a five-set event.

Nadal stressed that his decision had nothing to do with the tendinitis in his left knee. That injury prompted him to take a break following a second-round loss to then 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June.

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well as predicted by the doctors," Nadal said in a statement from his hometown of Manacor on the island of Mallorca. "But this virus didn't allow me to practice this past week and therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open."

The former No. 1 hopes to return at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, starting Feb. 27. He left open the possibility of playing at an earlier tournament if his recovery went well.

"As my team and doctors say, the safest thing to do is to do things well and this virus has delayed my plans of playing these weeks," Nadal said. "I always said that my return to competition will be when I am in the right conditions to play and after all this time away from the courts I'd rather not accelerate the comeback and prefer to do things well."

Nadal's doctor, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, said in the same statement that the player needed at least a week to recover from the virus. That ruled him out for the Qatar Open, which starts Jan. 2.

Nadal's coach and uncle, Toni Nadal, said going straight to a five-set tournament after being sidelined so long was "not appropriate."

"It is simply not conceivable that his first event is a best-of-five sets event," he said in a statement. "He wouldn't be ready for that."

Nadal's knee injury prevented the 11-time Grand Slam winner from defending his Olympic singles gold medal at last summer's games, where he was supposed to be Spain's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony. He also had to pull out of the U.S. Open and Spain's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic, which his teammates lost without him.

Nadal, ranked No. 4, won the Australian Open in 2009. Last year, he lost to top-ranked Novak Djokovic in a title match that lasted 5 hours, 53 minutes, the longest recorded Grand Slam final.

doomddom: Longterm Engagement Can Lead to Longterm ...

So with the TV series of ?Marrying the Game? ending, I started thinking about long-term engagements and I wondered why people stay engaged for long periods of time. No one should rush to propose but once you?re engaged, why lag?

The average engagement period in this country is between 1-1 1/2 years. What in the world takes so long to tie the knot? Sure, your dream wedding venue might be booked, you need to save money or other things come up but really ? a year and a half engagement? It seems to me that the longer you take to plan the wedding, the more expensive it becomes. I know from personal experience the more time you give me to plan an event, the more things I?ll find to spend money on. Anyone who is engaged for longer than a year must not want to get married. If you are spending more time fussing over having the perfect venue or the cost of the wedding, than you are focusing on the wrong things.

But getting back to my point?on the television show ?Marrying the Game?, the couple Tiffney and Jayceon were engaged to be married after dating on & off for 8 years. On the show, there were some issues that Tiffney felt needed to be addressed before walking down the aisle but at the end of the series the future of their relationship was unclear. It?s one thing to date for years & years on end but after breaking off an engagement there is no point in maintaining that relationship even with the purpose of ?working on things?. Why call off an engagement unless you?re ready to call off the relationship?? Even if you think that your situation will change with time, people don?t change.

I think that long term engagements are ridiculous: Are you really hoping that your relationship will improve because you?ve changed the date of your wedding?

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after the shot, plans 2013 launch in smartphones and tablets

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after you take the shot, plans to launch in smartphones and tablets next year

Hoping for some after-the-fact focusing in your next smartphone camera? Well, you'll have to wait around a year, but Toshiba's planning exactly that with a new module that houses an array of 500,000 tiny lenses. These are layered in front of the camera sensor, which can then capture slightly different images from compound lens arrangements. These can then be combined in a "complete" picture using Toshiba's own software. The camera will also be able to measure the distance between objects in the shot -- similar to how 3D images are captured -- with the user then able to focus on both close and distant detail, or even create images that are in-focus throughout. Toshiba says the module will also be able to capture video with a similar degree of focus management -- something that Lytro hasn't got around to just yet. The sensor is still a work in progress, but the manufacturer plans to commercialize the module before the end of 2013. Toshiba is looking to ally itself with multiple smartphone (and tablet) makers -- and here's hoping that it finds its way into a device outside of Japan.

[Thanks Franck]

As winter storm bears down on Midwest, death toll climbs

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- A powerful storm system that erupted Christmas Day with Gulf Coast tornadoes and snow in the nation's midsection headed for the Northeast on Wednesday, spreading blizzard conditions that slowed holiday travel.

The death toll rose to six with car accidents on snow and sleet-slickened highways in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Snow blew across southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday as the storm tracked up the Ohio River valley toward the Eastern seaboard and New England.

There were whiteout conditions in parts of southwestern Indiana, where 6 inches or more of snow had fallen by midmorning around Evansville. State police reported dozens of vehicles stuck after not being able to get up a hill on a central Indiana highway, while some roads around Evansville were impassable with wind gusts around 30 mph.

A blizzard warning was in effect for much of the state's southern two-thirds and more than a dozen counties issued travel watches asking residents to make only essential driving trips.

Indianapolis had 7 inches on the ground by 10 a.m. after receiving as much as 3 inches of snow in a single hour, said John Kwiatkowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. He said the storm's winds were just high enough to classify the storm as a blizzard, making it one of the strongest snowstorms in years to strike central and southern Indiana.

"The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex. Just to become a blizzard is quite an accomplishment. And it's sure a heck of a lot more than we've seen," he said.

In Arkansas, the storm left more than 189,000 customers without electricity Wednesday, utility Entergy Arkansas said.

Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.

State police reported scores of accidents on snow-covered highways in central and western Maryland, where forecasters predicted up to 5 inches of snow in most counties west of the Baltimore-Washington area, followed by freezing rain.

Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.

It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.

Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.

More than 900 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.

Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.

Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway died Wednesday when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck an SUV head-on. In Oklahoma, the Highway Patrol said a 76-year-old Wisconsin woman died Tuesday when the car she was riding in was hit head-on by a pickup truck on Interstate 44.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had earlier reported that a 28-year-old woman was killed in another crash Tuesday on a snowy highway. The storm's winds were blamed Tuesday for toppling a tree onto a pickup truck in Texas, killing the driver, and another tree onto a house in Louisiana, killing a man there.

Trees fell on homes and across roadways in several communities in southern Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency, saying eight counties reported damages and some injuries.

It included McNeill, where a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity for a time.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power for at least a time in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky up to Cleveland with predictions of several inches to a foot of snow. By the end of the week, that snow was expected to move into the Northeast with again up to a foot predicted

Jason Gerth said the Mobile tornado passed by in a few moments and from his porch, he saw about a half-dozen green flashes in the distance as transformers blew. His home was spared.

"It missed us by 100 feet and we have no damage," Gerth said.

Divorce-Proof Marriage: 10 Reasons I'm Sure We'll Never Split

By Amber Doty for YourTango.com

By now, you've probably heard the widely-touted statistic that the divorce rate in the U.S. is 50 percent. According to the Pew Research Center, though, the rate of divorce is on the decline (along with the rate of marriage). This success is likely due, in large part, to the fact that people are waiting longer than ever to walk down the aisle.

While I agree that stability is certainly important, I don't buy into the idea that age is a deciding factor in whether a marriage ends in divorce. It's not the case at all with my marriage.

My husband and I met and began dating when I was a teenager and were married in our early twenties. More than eight years later, I am as confident as I was on our wedding day that our marriage will last a lifetime. In fact, I would go so far to say our union is divorce-proof. Here are 10 reasons why.

1. We wanted a marriage, not a wedding. Recently, I had coffee with a friend going through a divorce after only two years of marriage. When I asked what happened, she replied without pause, "I wanted a wedding, not a marriage." She went on to explain that, after years of dating, getting married seemed like the next logical step in their relationship and the timing was right for them to fund the wedding of her dreams. From seating arrangements to color schemes and everything in between, there are many decisions to be made while planning a walk down the aisle. It can be easy to lose sight of the ultimate goal: to begin a lifelong relationship with the person you love. But the hard part isn't in saying "I do," it's in choosing to say it again and again for the rest of your life. For my husband and me, the focus was always on the morning after (and every other morning after that) instead of the "big day."

2. We didn't wait until after the wedding to tackle important issues. It can be awkward when you're dating to discuss things like the number and timing of children, personal approaches to finances, where you see yourself living down the road, or what religion your family will practice, but knowing the answers to these questions before you marry can mean the difference between a rocky start and a smooth transition into your new lives together. Everyone has their dealbreakers, but identifying ours before we gathered 100 of our closest friends and family members to pledge our lives together for all eternity cut down on surprises after they had all gone home. I am always shocked by the number of marriages that end in divorce because a couple never bothered to discuss their ideas for the future.

3. We put each other and our marriage first. Our children come second. I?ve written about it before here on YourTango. I love my children, but I am in love with my husband and prioritizing our relationship is good for our family as a whole.

4. When it comes to our relationship, our in-laws are outlawed. Mother-in-laws are at the center of many a sitcom and romantic comedy shenanigan -- and for good reason. They're notorious for causing marital strife both on-screen and off. That's why my husband and I have made it clear that while I can't control his mother's opinion on my cooking and he will never escape my mom's incessant nagging on the upkeep of our yard, their thoughts on our relationship are unwelcome. When we need advice or just to vent, we seek out the listening ear of a friend, not a family member.

5. Our bedroom is a child-free zone. Nothing kills the mood faster than reaching under the sheets mid-romp to dislodge an uncomfortable object that turns out to be a half-empty sippy cup.

6. We use our past to our advantage, not our detriment. My husband and I both come from divorced families, a fact that many studies agree puts couples at greater risk for divorce themselves. But history doesn't have to repeat itself. We talk openly, both together and with therapists, about what went wrong in our parents' marriages and how it affected our lives and our perception of matrimony.

7. We maintain common interests. One of the very first conversations my husband and I shared was a discussion of a book we had both recently read. It's dorky, but we're suckers for a good horror novel. While the differences in our personalities and our day-to-day are vast (he works long hours in law enforcement; I work from home as a freelance writer), we share reading material and talk about it regularly. A book club for two may not be the foundation on which our marriage is built, but it is a reminder of why we got together in the first place beyond the roles we have assumed since our relationship began.

8. We practice emotional self-regulation. In an article highlighting the skills every person should master before getting married, YourTango expert, Dr. Susan Heitler, emphasizes the importance of learning to control your emotions. You can remove nails driven into a board, but you can't undo the holes they create. The same is true for words said in the heat of the moment. Taking time to cool down instead of entering into a shouting match has been the difference between a marital spat and a major blow-up.

9. We give each other space. When I step out for a much needed day away from the house, I am confident my phone will not ring unless there is an emergency. Likewise, when he arrives home from work, I give him time to relax before handing off the childcare responsibilities. A little independence and time to ourselves is as vital to the health of our marriage as fostering a common bond.

10. We split the parenting duties equally. Nothing breeds resentment faster in a marriage than feeling like you are solely responsible for the diaper changing and late-night feedings. Since the day our first child was born my husband and I have adopted a 50/50 approach to parenting. "You get this one. I got the last one," is a frequently uttered phrase in our home. We also share the burden that being a parent can place on a career. There is no expectation that, as the woman, I will shoulder the responsibility of taking a day off when our children are ill. Nothing makes me feel more supported and secure in our relationship than knowing my husband and I are partners in parenthood.

Are you confident your marriage is divorce-proof? How do you maintain a healthy relationship with your spouse?

Jawbone UP

The Jawbone UP?($149.99 direct)?is in some ways everything I want from a fitness-tracking gadget. It tracks daily activity and sleep efficiency, comes with a supremely well-designed iPhone app, feels comfortable around my wrist, and includes a vibrating silent alarm, which anyone who shares a bed should at least try. And yet, when I compare it with my favorite fitness device and PCMag's Editors' Choice, the $100 Fitbit One, the Jawbone UP doesn't quite measure up.

The UP costs $50 more and misses many key features that the Fitbit just gets right. One is discretion?not everyone wants to be seen wearing what is essentially a pedometer. The Fitbit One fits snugly on a bra strap, in a pocket, or attached to your waistband. Also, the Jawbone doesn't connect to any other apps or devices. The Fitbit integrates with all the major calorie-counting apps, as well as a Wi-Fi bathroom scale, the Fitbit Aria, for automated weigh-ins.?I wanted to love the Jawbone UP, just as I wanted to love the Nike+ FuelBand. I had high expectations of both, but a middling and lackluster experience.

Design
The relatively thin and flexible bracelet comes in three sizes (small, medium, large) and eight colors: onyx, mint green, light gray, blue, navy blue, red, orange, and hunter green. An embossed zigzag extends the length of the wrap-around band, which is made of medical-grade, hypoallergenic TPU rubber. In theory, you can wear it all the time, even in the shower, although I have not yet given it the full splash test. I'll let common sense, rather?than the instruction manual,?guide that decision.

What's included? You get the UP band, a not-very-helpful quick start guide that will point you to Jawbone's website for additional instructions, and a USB charging cable. Inside the band is a lithium-ion polymer battery that lasts about 10 days on a single charge.

Some reviewers like the Jawbone UP's look, but I doubt they went to a formal dinner in a sleeveless dress while still wearing it. If a device is meant to be worn 24/7, as the Jawbone UP is, I need the option to wear it discreetly. That's a huge selling point for the Fitbit, and a major con for the UP.

It's All in the App
The best aspects of the Jawbone UP are found in the iOS app, the primary?nay, only?way you interact with data. The app shows how many miles you've walked, calories you've burned, charts of your sleeping patterns, your mood should you choose to log it daily, and a summary of what you've eaten.

But wait. There's more. From the app, you can set a silent alarm that vibrates up to 30 minutes ahead of your designated wake up time if it spots an ideal moment for you to get up based on your REM cycles. Pretty neat, eh? There's also a power nap switch that, when activated, looks at your sleep habits to determine whether your best nap would be a 27-minute rest or a 45-minute siesta, or something in between. It then sets the appropriate alarm. The Fitbit One has a silent alarm, too, but it only vibrates at the time you set. One more silent alarm I like in the Jawbone UP is an "idle alert," which I scheduled to remind me to get off my butt after 90 minutes of inactivity Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Graphics in the Jawbone UP's app delight the eye with vivacious colors. Interactive gesture-based motions look smooth and fluid. But here's the catch: You must connect the Jawbone to your iPhone's or iPad's headset jack to sync the data and be able to see it. That is to say, the rubbery and lightweight bracelet tells you next to nothing in itself. There are no readouts or displays on the device.?In other words, you need an iOS device. According to the company, an Android app is in hopper, but it's not on the market yet.

The Fitbit One, meanwhile, spoils you with data in a Web app, in mobile apps, and on the gadget itself. Press its tiny button, and you can cycle through your fitness stats, or just view the time, at a moment's notice.

What's Missing and Conclusions
The latest gadgets in the personal fitness market add a heart rate monitor directly on the device, no chest strap needed. I recently received a Basis Alpha to test, which has this feature, and am psyched to write about it soon. A high-tech feature such as this one sets the Jawbone UP even further behind the pack.

The few aspects of the Jawbone UP that I like, I really like. This device could have been great, but the fact that it's limited to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users decreases its overall appeal considerably. And in light of our Editors' Choice, the Fitbit One, Jawbone's band doesn't really compete. If you have an iPhone and don't mind not being able to see your data right on the device, it could be a great option, but it's still 50 bucks more.
