One particular strategy that I'm talking about is search engine marketing. These people use Google to get a lot of traffic and sales.

Traffic is important, and list building is important also. When you combine the two, you can get nothing except good results. I highly suggest that you start using them today if you want to have the success that you're looking for in your online business.

Joe Lauzon: ?I don?t want to have wars if that means I?m going to forget my own name?

Joe Lauzon's followers on Twitter and Instagram have been treated to the after pictures from Lauzon's bloody, three-round battle with Jim Miller at UFC 155. Lauzon has shared a picture every day of the swelling, cuts and bruises that came from the bout, which Lauzon lost by decision. The picture above is from Wednesday night, when Lauzon said he was "starting to look better."

The pictures are a poignant and even painful reminder of the kind of damage fighters take in the fights we love the most. Lauzon has only had two fights go to decision in his career. He is aware of the kind of damage fighters can take in bouts like his on Saturday.

"I don't feel I've taken any real abuse or punishment," Lauzon said. "But the thing is I don't want to. I don't want to have wars if that means I'm going to forget my own name. If it got to that point, I would reassess everything and take a step back.

Most of the time, Lauzon wins his fights by submission. Eighteen of his 22 wins have ended with a submission, which usually means less damage than in a knockout.

Lauzon worked in information technology and went to school for computer science. He has plenty of opportunities outside of fighting.

Safety Survey Reveals Lab Risks

Scientists may have a false sense of security about the safety of their laboratories, according to early results from the first international survey of researchers? workplace attitudes and practices.

Some 86% of the roughly 2,400 scientists who responded said that they believe their labs are safe places to work. Yet just under half had experienced injuries ranging from animal bites to chemical inhalation, and large fractions noted frequent lone working, unreported injuries and insufficient safety training on specific hazards (see ?A question of safety?).

?Understanding this disparity will be key to positively changing safety culture,? says James Gibson, head of environmental health and safety at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The university?s Center for Laboratory Safety, a research initiative set up in March 2011, commissioned the study as part of a wave of US-led efforts to examine safety culture following the shocking death of a 23-year-old research assistant, Sheharbano Sangji. She received horrific burns in a UCLA lab fire four years ago (see Nature http://doi.org/dnws3n; 2009), and her supervisor, organic chemist Patrick Harran, may face a criminal trial over her death. Other incidents, including a second lab death, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 2011 (see Nature 472, 270?271; 2011), have added to the concerns.

The study ?is the most comprehensive attempt at gathering data on attitudes to safety that I?ve seen???and one more piece of information in a growing body of reports that point to the need to improve the culture around safety in our academic laboratories,? says Dorothy Zolandz, director of the US National Academies Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology. Nature Publishing Group,the publisher of Nature, helped to launch the survey, as did the firm BioRAFT, which provides software for safety compliance and receives investment from Digital Science, a sister company to Nature Publishing Group. UCLA?s Center for Laboratory Safety plans to analyze the data more closely later this year, but shared early results with Nature.

Part and parcel
Some of the anonymized survey participants ? who were mostly from the United States and United Kingdom, but also hailed from Europe, China and Japan ? felt that any injuries they sustained were just part of the job. ?Was scratched by a monkey,? one scientist wrote. ?It?s bound to happen in that line of work, no matter how careful you are.? Another was bitten while extracting venom from rattlesnakes; a third reported being sprayed on the face and hands with sulphuric acid, leading to US$3,000 of dermatology treatments. The most common injuries were minor???cuts, lacerations and needle pricks???but 30% of respondents said they had witnessed at least one ?major? lab injury, something that required attention from a medical professional. More than one-quarter of junior researchers said that they had experienced an injury that they hadn?t reported to their supervisor.

Yet the overwhelming majority of respondents asserted that their labs were safe places to work, that they had received sufficient safety training to minimize injury and that appropriate safety measures had been taken to protect employees. This level of comfort is similar to that found in other, smaller surveys, says Ralph Stuart, secretary of the American Chemical Society?s health and safety division (which has conducted its own surveys on the matter).

But more specific questions in the survey reveal that safety standards are often not adhered to. Only 60% said they had received safety training on specific hazards or agents they worked with, and around half agreed that lab safety could be improved, with chemists (60%) most likely to feel this, and neuroscientists (30%) significantly less so.

PlayJam launches Kickstarter campaign for game console on a USB ...

PlayJam is touting its GameStick as the ?most portable TV games console ever created.? It is an Android video game console on a universal serial bus (USB) stick. And the company has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $100,000 via Kickstarter today.

After half a day, PlayJame has already raised $48,000, leaving it nearly halfway to its goal. The campaign runs for 30 more days.

San Francisco-based PlayJam is the latest company that wants to bring games designed for smartphones and tablets to the TV. You can already do this if you have a set-top box with Google TV. But PlayJam intends to couple its USB stick with a game controller that allows you to play touchscreen games with a traditional game controller.

GameStick plugs into a TV?s HDMI slot and comes with a Bluetooth-based game controller. You can snap the USB stick into the controller when you want to take it on the road. You could easily play this on a hotel room TV while traveling. PlayJam?s executives say they will sell the GameStick for $79. The project was born from the belief that game consoles and games are still too expensive and aren?t open enough when it comes to content options. As such, it is a rival to the Ouya game console scheduled for this spring.

The device runs the Jelly Bean version of the Android mobile operating system and uses Amlogic?s 8726-MX processor. That processor uses a dual-core cortex A9 central processing unit designed by ARM and it also has a dual-core Mali 400 graphics processing unit from ARM. PlayJam says the system can run the most demanding Android games now available. The device has Wi-Fi capability and 1GB of main memory and 4GB of NAND flash memory. It also has 8GB of micro-SD memory.

?To date, the most popular route to TV has been via traditional console manufacturers but the associated restrictions and cost make this unviable for the majority of game developers,? said PlayJam chief executive Jasper Smith in a statement. ?We want to break down these barriers and open up the big screen to the thousands of developers looking to break into the living room. For the consumer, we want to bring a huge range of affordable games via a unique, highly portable device.?

PlayJam has its own publishing platform on Android for Smart TV games, and it has a network of 250 developers. It plans to tap those developers to make content for GameStick. The PlayJam network is integrated with Smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Sony.

?GameStick is an important step in what we hope will be an industry-wide, collaborative approach to develop a new open ecosystem for TV games,? Smith said. ?To further accelerate this, we offer our underlying platform, user interface, content and expertise to any hardware manufacturers wanting to enter this sector.?

The company has support from Charles Huang, cocreator of Guitar Hero and founder of Green Throttle Games, which is making its own Android-based game controller for TV games. Huang appears in PlayJam?s Kickstarter video voicing his support.

The GameStick is currently in a closed beta test with working prototypes.

?We hope to see games developers everywhere getting as excited about the GameStick and trends it represents as we are and getting behind us on this campaign,? Smith said.
